Our Final Day of Centers!

We concluded our Asia Overview Centers today.  Although it was a quick preview, students should now have an idea about our adventure through Asia for the last nine weeks of school.  If you did not finish your center work please remember that you MUST come in during homeroom tomorrow to complete your packet.  The completed center packet is due tomorrow.

Students were also given a personal map of India assignment to complete by Wednesday.  You will need to draw the country of India on the white sheet we provided you with today in class.  I have attached the power point slide that gives you ALL of the directions for your map.  It also includes all of the items you need to place on your map.

Asia…Here We Come!

We have finally arrived to our LAST unit of study…ASIA!  Today students participated in Asia Overview centers.  They visited two of the six centers.  By Monday, they will visit all six centers.  The point of these centers is so that students will gain a understanding of each aspect of Asia that we are going to study.  There was a Map Center, Environmental Issues Center, Economy Center, Historical Center, Government Center, and a Religion Center.  Students seemed to enjoy the transition from Africa to Asia.  By the end of the centers, we will answer the essential question; Is Asia more or less advanced than Africa?

News and Notes:

  • The remaining Country Extension Presentations will be on Monday 3/15.

Country Extension Presentations

With the exception of a couple of classes, students completed the presentations of their country extension projects today.  It was a nice relaxing day after our Africa Unit Test yesterday.  Tomorrow, we will  begin our study of Asia…get ready it is going to be ALOT of fun :)

News and Notes:

  • If you did not present your country extension project today, you will do so tomorrow at the beginning of class!

A note from Mrs. Wing…

got hope???

You may have heard that there is a t-shirt sales campaign going on at McClure and not know the background of the ”why”.  At McClure, we have several students dealing with significant medical issues (among those cancer and organ transplant needs).  We as a school community wanted to reach out to help those families and to show our support for them financially and visually.

Each advisement group was asked to develop a theme – one line – that would show visual support for these students as we wear the shirts, but also generate conversation about why we are wearing them.  Each advisement group submitted suggestions and the student body as a whole chose the winning theme “got hope?”

We are currently selling the t-shirts for $10 or a bracelet that says got hope? for $3.  You can purchase both as a set for $12.  All proceeds from the shirts will be given to these families to meet the additional financial needs that they are incurring.  The families may choose to give the funds to the charity of their choice if they personally don’t need the funds.  One of the families has been assisted tremendously by the Rally Foundation and may earmark the funds they receive for that organization.

This is a time where we can all step out and make a personal difference to students at our school.  We hope that you will purchase a shirt and talk to your friends and neighbors about purchasing one as well to help these families!  The shirts are on sale for the next few days and are available in black with white print, black with hot pink print and brown with turquoise print.  Checks may be made payable to McClure Middle School PTSA.

Thanks for your support!

Susan Wing, Principal

Test Day!! Woohoo!

Today students took their Africa Unit Test.  Remember if you have not presented your country extension project you will do so tomorrow!  Have a relaxing afternoon!

AIDS…The Grim Statistics

Today was our last day in Africa :( Students completed their World Hunger packets and saw many heartbreaking pictures that depict the reality of world hunger in Africa today.  We moved our focus to AIDS when students looked at the Grim Statistics and saw the  numbers of people who have AIDS, where these people live, the treatments they use etc…  Some may wonder, why doesn’t anybody help?  Well people have tried, but excuses seem to overtake their efforts.  Students learned this after reading the Pandemic Report.  The last thing we did today was go over any questions that students may have had on the study guide.  Remember to studay tonight!

News and Notes:

  • Your Africa Unit test is TOMORROW…be sure to study and get a good night’s rest!
  • Country extension presentations will be Wednesday!

If a country is a Republic, does that mean it is a Democracy?!?

NO!  It is a little confusing so hopefully this will clear it up for you:

Just because a country is considered a Republic does not mean that they are considered a Democracy.  A Republic is when a nation is bound by a “constitution” that gives the people the right to elect their representatives.  However, just because they elect their representative does not mean that they have freedom; which would be the case in a democracy.  So the Republic of Sudan allows it’s people to elect it’s government officials but the rights of the people and the way that they government governs the people does not match that of a democracy.

I hope this helps you out!  If you have any further questions PLEASE feel free to ask :)

Moving out of Africa!

World Hunger and AIDS conclude our study of Africa.  Today, students listened to “Ruth’s Poem”,  a poem written by a mother with AIDS.  It was a very sad and real picture of just what AIDS does to the family of the victim.  Students also listened to an article ”Africa’s AIDS Orphans”.  This article discussed the issue currently facing Africa today; orphans.  These orphans lost their parents to AIDS and now they have nowhere to go, but an orphanage.  It is a sad and true story.  We talked about the difference between an epidemic and a pandemic.  An epidemic being a disease in strictly one area, and a pandemic being a disease that has spread to an entire country or multiple countries.  Student finished working on their world hunger packets for the remainder of class time.

On a happier note, I am VERY excited to hear and see the next set of presentations on Monday!

News and Notes:

  • If you have not presented yet, be prepared to present on Wednesday!
  • Your Africa Unit Test is Tuesday…study, study, study!

The Invisible Children of Uganda…

Today, students watched the movie “Invisible Children”.  They were able to see the true story that the children of Uganda live through everyday.  It was an eye-opening experience and taught us not to take ANYTHING for granted!

News and Notes:

  • Your GREEN note sheet is due tomorrow!
  • Remember your Africa Unit Test has been moved to Tuesday (3/9)

World Hunger

We got further into our study or World Hunger today.  Students continued working on their World Hunger packets and anwering the questions.  The article was very interesting and brought to light many horrible statistics that face Africa today.

News and Notes:

  • Read the article “Africa Enviromental Issues” (cream colored) AND use the green note sheet to complete notes on the article by Friday!
  • Your Africa Unit Test has been moved to TUESDAY.
  • Bring a healthy snack tomorrow because we will be watching “Invisible Children”
