Parparation for CRCT

Posted by: admin | March 24, 2009 Comments Off |

Language Arts students are continuing working on grammar and reading skills. Friday we will have a grammar quiz. Students must know parts of speech, complete predicate, complete subject, clauses in a sentence, purpose of a sentence, and type of sentence. They must be able to recognize a correctly punctuated sentence. For example:

a. John said, "The party is Friday at 7:00 PM.

b. Frank explained you are my best friend

c. "When you go to school, you learn new facts," Martha yelled.

answer is C

In reading we are recognizing base words, prefixes, suffixes, facts, opinions, topic sentences (main ideas), author's purpose, genres, and vocabulary used in context.

All work is presented in multiple choice format similar to the CRCT.

Regards,

Gail

Beginning 4th 9 weeks

Language Arts students wrote an essay, a comic strip, or a brochure. Their pieces were about heroes, a problem they had, and solutions to the problem.

We read a play, "These Shoes of Mine."Manuel was a hero because he shared his new shoes with his uncle who needed them for a job interview.  Joey Pigza Loses Control is another book we are enjoying. The students are anxious to find out if Joey wins the ballgame and if Pablo behaves.

The students continue with daily grammar practice and daily reading practice. We are reviewing parts of speech with an emphasis on prepositional phrases.

Expository Reading and Writing

Posted by: admin | February 10, 2009 Comments Off |

Language arts students have been reading and writing expository or factual essays. We have used the writing process to plan, write a rough draft, revise, edit, and write a final draft. Our essays were about comparing and contrasting Oreos and Ritz crackers.

We are now reading and writing persuasive essays. Today we read a persuasive paragraph and created a chart of changes we would like to make in our world. This chart will be used to write a persuasive essay.

All LA students should have written 5 out 8 journal pages and read about 500 pages out of the 700 they are required to read. Both of these assignments are due by March 12.

This week we have done 23 weeks of daily grammar practice (DGP). Friday we will have a DGP quiz. The students must be able to identify the following:

Sentence type – simple, compound, or complex

Sentence purpose – interrogative, exclamatory, declarative, imperative

verbs – action, linking, helping

complements – direct objects, predicate nouns, predicate adjectives, indirect objects

clauses – independent, dependent

action verbs – transitive, intransitive

capitalize and punctuate

parts of speech – common noun, proper noun, possessive proper noun, conjunction

diagram – recognize the correct way to diagram a given sentence

Your child has all of this information in their LA binder. Please have them study for this important quiz.

Expository Reading and Writing

Expository essays are based on facts. LA students will be reading and writing factual essays. I also encourage your child to read nonfiction books this 9 weeks. Please continue to summarize the books read on a Read and Record Log. 10 pages should be read each day until 700 pages have been read and recorded.

Thursday we will have a quiz on Action verbs (AV)and Linking verbs (LV) and their complements direct objects (DO), predicate nominative (PN), and predicate adjective. Your child should bring home notes and work samples to study. For example:

  S      AV   DO

John ate dinner.

   S    LV  PA

Joe felt sad.

S    LV    PN

We are friends.
