Grammar
We will be using the Daily Grammar Practice program to learm grammar this year. Using this program, students are required to perform specific tasks, on a daily basis, to the same sentence all week long. These tasks reinforce lessons we have discussed in class. As the year goes on, we will add to the daily tasks, and continue the previously learned ones.
The following powerpoint is a reminder for the students as to which tasks they need to perform each night for homework: Daily Grammar Practice-Daily Tasks
The following link contains the DGP (Daily Grammar Practice) sentences for the year:
Parts of Speech
We took notes as a class over the 8 parts of speech (Parts of Speech Notes). Here is the powerpoint we used: Parts of Speech 3
For their second Narratives, the students are going to begin adding descriptive words to their stories. This should add some colorful description to their sentences. The first way to add that color is to infuse Adjectives and Adverbs to their writing. We will be discussing these in class using the following guided notes:
Guided Notes: Adjectives And Adverbs
Powerpoint: Adjectives and Adverbs Pwrpt.
Writers can use dialoge to drive the plot forward, or reveal information. But, there are rules that govern writing dialogue. We will discuss these as a class before the students include dialogue in their narratives. The grammar rules for dialogue are located on the following link:
Dialogue: Dialogue Writing Punctuation
Our DGP program has introduced two new grammar concepts. These concepts are ones that the students use, but have yet put a name to. We are discussing them in class using the following powerpoints:
Appositives: Appositives
Nominative Case: Pronouns (Only the first section was discussed)
Sentence Writing Strategies
We have started to look at how to properly write a simple sentence, as well as how to write different sentence styles. We are doing this so that the students can become more proficient writers. Differing sentence structures in their writing will help their writing sound mor fluid and complex.
So far, we have looked at, and taken notes on simple and compound sentences. The following powerpoint gives the information the students are learning in class.
