Reading One Million Words
In case you haven’t heard, one of the 6th Grade English Language Arts Standards is that all students read a minimum of 25 grade-level appropriate books or book equivalents (approx. 1,000,000 words) per year from a variety of subject disciplines and genres. One of the ways you’ve already been exposed to this standard is your summer reading challenge. We will continue working towards the one million word goal through both independent reading (they can log anything they read!) and through our in-class reading assignments. Whether reading together or apart, it is crucial that all students keep track of their reading and follow through with their reading assignments each nine weeks. The 6th Grade language arts program requires 450 pages and two separate genres per nine week period! During the first nine week period, students will be required to use the same log that was used during summer reading to track their page totals. As the year progresses, alternate options for providing evidence of reading will be introduced. As new options are introduced, students are encouraged to select the approach that best suits his/her skill level and learning style.
