Can You believe it? Another year is just about over and summer break is almost here again. We are still having a great year at Austell Primary and you have been a huge supporter of it. Thank you very much for your cooperation and diligence. Your attendance at the PTA Meetings, Parent Conference Week, Title 1 activities and Dads Day has made this school year successful. Now, we look forward to seeing you at the Beach Party, Field Day, Muffins for Moms and Spring Fling.
Our students and staff have worked very hard and I take this opportunity to extend my thanks to them, also. They have been encouraged by our community and its prayers. I greatly appreciate what the community has done to enable our success.
As the summer approaches, students are looking forward to play time. During the long hot summer, students often lose much of what they were taught during the school year. Here are some things you can do with your child to encourage out of school learning. Holidays are a good time to visit your local library with your child. This will motivate him/her to get interested in reading. Reading, as you know, is a key component to a student’s academic achievement. You can get an assortment of books that give practice in all of the basic skill areas and have your child do a couple of workbook pages once a day. It’s also, important for children to have structure at home, even during holidays. This is the time to visit various museums and places of historical interest in your area. Have your child keep a journal of his/her summer activities. Summer is an opportunity to spend quality time with your children.
I wish you a wonderful summer.

CCLOSER TO THE END
DADS BREAKFAST
On Friday, March 19, 2010, we will celebrate all Austell Primary dads. My staff and I are inviting all dads to come and have breakfast with their children. In addition, you will be able to connect with other dads and spend time talking about your fantastic children. The food will be delicious and the company will be pleasant. Also, we have vouchers for the Atlanta Hawks vs. Detroit Pistons on April 3rd and vouchers for the Atlanta Thrashers vs. Boston Bruins on March 23rd. Both games will be at Philips Arena at 7:00pm. You might be able to take the whole family. How exciting!
We hope to see you on Friday, March 19th for delicious food and lots of fun.
The CRCT
Since August 2009, we have been preparing our students to take the Criterion Reference Competency Test (CRCT). This test will be given, after spring break, on April 14, 15 and 16 to all first grade students in English/language arts, reading and math to determine the students’ academic strengths and weaknesses in these content areas.
To make sure our students are ready to take the test and will make a passing score in all content areas, our teachers do regular assessment and conferencing with individual students at least once a week. By making this a daily routine, the teachers are made aware of the skills that need to be retaught and the goals that need to be set. With this method, we can be assured that each child has the ability to reach his/ her highest potential. It is very important for each student to score as high as possible.
At this time of the year, we greatly need your support. It is essential that you tutor your child every night by using the study packet that was given to you by your child’s teacher during Conference Week. Also, please make sure your child is at school everyday and on time. Please see that he/she is here by 7:30 to receive breakfast and no later than 7:45 to be prepared to take the test. Late students will not be permitted to go into the classroom until the testing period is over.
Principal’s Thanksgiving Message
My favorite holiday is Thanksgiving Day because it provides time for all of us to express thanks for our material and spiritual well being. My family celebrates by gathering at my mother’s house with all of my brothers, sisters, their children, uncles, aunts and anybody else who wants to join us. We try to forget about the difficulties and reflect on all of the blessings that we have received while we feast on a perfect, delicious and heart filling dinner.
I believe all of us have much to be thankful for regardless of the disappointments that we have experienced this year. Therefore, I’ll be prayerfully thinking of all of Austell Primary’s families, students and staff members during this season of thanksgiving. My request is that you think of my family and me, too.
