27 02 2009

We finished grading graphic organizer wkbk pgs. 19-20. Copies of notes were given to those requiring them. (Check classwork section of binder for these.)

Through today's video stream, we reviewed the geography, natural resources, and economy of Mexico. We reviewed the difference between natural resources vs. domesticated plants/animals.On Monday we will continue with the economy, history, and government sections.

Homework is to continue to research issues in your country and to study for Thursday's Chapter 7 test.

Have a nice weekend!!

Test Review/Checking Graphic Organizers

26 02 2009

Sorry, due to technical difficulties at school and I staying late today, my BLOG is posting much later than usual.

Today we reviewed for our Chapter 7 test as we checked and discussed this week's graphic organizer pages. Remember that the Chap 7 test is March 5 and that your country presentations will be on March 13. Also grades have been updated a couple times this week; don't forget to check i-parent.

*** I still have students needing to make up the Chap 6 test. No one will be able to make it up after tomorrow. This is truely your last chance. ***

As you use your graphic organizer pages and Cornell Notes to study for the Chapter 7 test, do not forget that a good strategy is to choose 2-3 pages per night and review them briefly for about 10 minutes. By the time Thursday rolls around, you should be well prepared for the test and not have to cram the night before!

Homework is to continue to review for the test and to work on researching issues for your presentations. Mexico's group received several ideas on current issues in class today; see if you can uncover some articles to further explore these issues!!

Chap 7 & Country Research

25 02 2009

We reviewed last night's Chap 7, Less 3 wkbk pg 19, and then went over the rubric for the Latin America country issues rubric. See download.

Download COUNTRY RESEARCH-Cuba, Brazil, Mexico, Venezuela Rubric

Presentations will be on Friday, March 13. Students will research in class this coming Monday-Wednesday; along with completing InspirEd Centers as they continue to study Mexico.

Remember that the Chap 7 (Mexico) test will be on Thursday, March 5.

After groups meet about their research, they read and discussed Chap 7, Lesson 4 and added to the graphic organizer on wkbk pg 20.

Homework is to complete wkbk pg 20. Remember that we are now writing the Section B vocab as Cornell Notes. Main vocab on the left; bulleted info on the right.

Mexico’s Changing Economy

24 02 2009

Student's worked together building basic knowledge of Mexico's changing economy as they read and discussed Chap 7, Less 3. We discussed nationalization, community ownership, and privatization of agriculture and businesses. Homework is to finish wkbk pg 19. We will finish the book sections by Thursday and begin InspirEd Centers on Monday. Chap 7 test will be on Thursday, March 5.

Most groups have divided their country research into four areas and are now gathering information about current issues and US relationships in the areas of political, environmental, economical, and historical realm. Groups will meet tomorrow and work on their project part of their classtime. We'll go over the rubric at that time.

Have a nice evening!!

Mexico Past & Present

23 02 2009

We continued learning about Mexico as we discussed it's road to independence. We reviewed Friday's Cornell Notes; those requiring copies of notes and those who were absent were given copies today.

We also discussed Mexican Revolution and Reform in Chap 7, Less 2, then students worked on wkbk pg 18. Homework is to finish this wkbk page. Students were also given until tomorrow to bring in info about their countries' group project. Rubric & written guidelines will be given tomorrow for this research.

Have a wonderful evening!!

Cornell Note Taking/Chap 7, Section 1

20 02 2009

After checking wkbk pg 17, we continued discussing the establishment of New Spain and the events leading up to the independence of Mexico.

We reviewed Cornell Note Taking as students wrote Cornell Notes from a Chap 7, Less 1 PowerPoint and related it to how they have previously taken Cornell Notes. Many commented that they still have trouble picking out the most important info and tended to want to "recopy" the book. A few felt they did not catch all the important facts. We will continue working on this throughout next week along with their country group research.

Homework is to make sure that you have something to bring in about the Latin American country your group was assigned to research. Hopefully you already did this a few weeks back!!! Check previous BLOG entries.

Remember that you may bring in a book from the public library, list of websites, Internet articles… including articles about current environmental, social, political, or economic issues. Print out or save to a flash drive. You will use this info to share with your group during research time in class next week.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Ending Ancient Civ/Beginning Spanish Colonization

19 02 2009

Due to today being Science Day, period 3 classes met very briefly to write in their agenda and to be reminded of tonight's homework:wkbk pg 17. Then they went to a science presentation by  Dr. Craig Anderson. Ask your child about all the amazing things they saw especially the frozen marshmallows!!!

As we begin studying Mexico, students will focus on how historical events influenced the development of Mexico's government, economy, and culture. In most classes, students began reading Chap 7, Less 1. I gave pointers on how to best answer the questions in the workbook.

Homework is to complete wkbk pg 17. Also, those who were absent last Friday and have not made up the Chap 6 test; tomorrow is the final deadline to do so. Please come in homeroom to take the ScanTron portion. The essay portion may be made up during class tomorrow.

Hope everyone has a nice evening!!

18 02 2009

Students did a wonderful job presenting their intellectual advancement centers today! Thanks to those who were absent and sent in your part. This really helped your groups out.

Tomorrow we will add any additional info to our charts and then will begin Chap 7, our study of Mexico. You may begin reading Chapter 7 and completing the corresponding graphic organizer workbook page 17. It will be due on Friday.

Absences; Make Up Work; Presentations

17 02 2009

Presentations went very well today!! We had some computer glitches, but students were prepared to continue on with their presentations.  Remember that you had the weekend to email me any PPT, etc. to make sure they worked or not!! Save as PPT (2003) not PPTX (2007).

Progress reports went home today. Friday's test and today's presentations are not on it. I hope to have these grades posted by Thursday. Homework is to have parents sign "on the progress report" and return it to school for my records showing that they saw it. Thanks!!

We had 5 absences today and several on Friday! Hopefully you had shared your ancient civilization info with your group last week so they could present it today with the group. See me in homeroom upon your return so you can share your contribution to the group with me.

Also, if you missed Friday's test make sure you see me to make it up ASAP. Thanks!!

Don't forget to wash your hands before lunch and as soon as you step in the door of your house!! Get plenty of sleep and eat more fruit!! Lot's of "stuff" going around and I hate to see anymore of you getting sick!!!!!

For those of you from whom I've received emails that you will be out til Thursday or Friday and want to keep up…….On Thursday, we will begin Chap 7, our study of Mexico. You may begin reading Chapter 7 and completing the corresponding graphic organizer workbook pages as you begin to recuperate.
