Greece & Rome

30 09 2009

Today, we continued learning about Greek and Roman civilizations and their influence on our government, culture, and economics of today.

Check Pinnacle if you have not done so recently. I’ve updated grades. I still have a couple students who need to make up work, before the end of the 9 week grading period, which ends next Friday.

Homework is to complete Chap 10, Sect. 4 wkbk. pg 32.

Remember that our Olympic Academic Bowl is tomorrow at 2:45.

Olympic Opening Day

28 09 2009

McClure’s Olympic Opening Ceremony was this afternoon.

Also, we had a special visitor from Australia in our classroom today !! His soccer team came from Australia to visit the United States and to play some teams here. Team members spent the day in different classes at McClure to learn what American schools look like and to share their first hand knowledge of Australia.

Our soccer player talked about how Australia is similiar and different from the US. We learned about Australia’s government,  money, landmarks, animals, and culture. We also learned some of unique vocabulary!

Students injoyed this preview of our Australian studies, which will begin mid-winter.

Don’t forget to complete wkbk pg. 31 by Wednesday.

Building Background

25 09 2009

Students divided into cooperative groups today as we prepared for Center Activities which will begin next week.

Groups worked on reading and notetaking skills as they read and discussed sections 2-4 of chapter 10. Students used the graphic organizers on wkbk pgs. 30-32 as they organized, analyzed, debated, and summarized information. I was really impressed with the level of  critical thinking skills used during these discussions!!

Continue to gather info, resources, graphics, websites related to your country. Think of the five strands of social studies. Check previous BLOG notes for more info. Remember that we will officially begin our research the week after Olympics, at which time I’ll give detailed guidelines, rubrics, etc.

Back on Track

24 09 2009

My heart goes out to all of you who have had water damage and are trying to get everything dried out. Glad to see that most of my students were back in school today!!

Using Chap. 10 of our textbook, we worked on building background knowledge of early civilizations as we began to answer the EQ: “How did early civilizations in Europe influence the government, culture, and economics of Europe today?”

A few students have not completed wkbk pg. 29.
It is homework to finish if you have not done so.

Due to some classes missing 3 days of school this week, we will begin our Center Activities next week. Also, the European Scavenger Hunt will be rescheduled to next week.

Picture Day has been rescheduled to October 22.

Stormy Weather

23 09 2009

Sorry!! Due to being in meetings on Monday and today, helping students get home during flooding, and home Internet service being down yesterday…… I have not posted on my BLOG!!

Hope everyone is safe and doing well!

I have heard that Cobb County has posted on their website that there will be school for students tomorrow.

See you all in the morning!

GRADES HAVE BEEN UPDATED

18 09 2009

Capital tests, make-up work, and all retakes have been graded and posted on Pinnacle!!

Enjoy your weekend!

Chapter 10 & Countries

18 09 2009

Students worked on wkbk pgs. 29 & 30 today.
Don’t forget to bring  your signed ACSS Progress Report to me in homeroom on Monday, if you did not turn yours in today.

They also were assigned the name of a country in Europe. This is for a project, which will begin the week after Olympics. Remember that this is a hunting & gathering time. Begin looking for websites, graphics, recipes, holidays, etc. related to your country.

We also discussed some options for presentations.
Brainstorm some ideas of your own ( :
For those of you needing help to create your country folder on your flashdrive, bring it in on Tuesday, and I’ll help you set yours up during our Virtual Library European Scavenger Hunt in the Media Center.
If you already know how to do this, you may create a country folder on your flashdrive, then create a graphic folder inside it. You may also begin a Microsoft Word document page with all the cool website addresses you find relating to your country.

I’ll give out rubrics, directions, and checklists once we officially start the project after Olympic week.

 Enjoy your weekend.

Odyssey & Academic Bowl

17 09 2009

Mrs. Williams and I introduced students to Odyssey of the Mind today. This is a competitive club in which we sponsor and coach at McClure MS. It helps develop team building and critical thinking skills. Intent forms were sent home with students who were interested in trying out. We have 7-8 openings for this year. Click on the Odyssey of the Mind tab on my BLOG or go to the National website on my links if you are interested.

We also are looking for two parents who are willing to help coach a team. Please email me if you are interested.

We have completed our Academic Bowl quiz and the names of those who will be competing during our Olympic week will be announced shortly.

Students, who needed to, retook the test on European countries today. I hope to grade and post the retake and capital tests by Friday evening.

Tomorrow, students will choose a European country to begin researching. I’m letting students have the name early, so they may begin gathering  materials, info, and current events related to their country. Once we officially start the project, I’ll give students directions/expectations, rubrics,  and a due date check off list.

Students continued to work on wkbk pg. 29. Those who finished, began wkbk pg. 30. We are working on organizing info into Cornell Notes and/or graphic organizers. After discussing, checking, and correcting these pages, they will become a study guide for the Chapter 10 test. Date to be announced soon.

No Homework!!

Test Retake Tomorrow

16 09 2009

Thanks to all of you who attended Open House last night!!

Don’t forget that the retake for the European country test is tomorrow morning at 8:15 A.M.  Also, if you were absent and need to make up any missed work/tests, you may come in tomorrow at 8:15. If you are retaking the test tomorrow morning, study tonight.

4 1/2 weeks Progress Reports went home today. I also printed out ACSS Progress Reports for each of my students, so we could discuss areas to improve and to develop strategies to be more successful. Be sure to have parents sign and return by Friday.

Students worked on writing Cornell Notes as they continued to work on wkbk pg 29, Chap. 10, Section 1. I also explained how I would be grading workbook pages this year. We will continue with Cornell Notes tomorrow.

TEST ON EUROPEAN CAPITALS

15 09 2009

Students seemed very confident as they took today’s test!! I hope to have these graded and posted by Wednesday evening.

After students completed their test, they read Chapter 10, Lesson 1 and wrote notes in a graphic organizer on workbook page 29. We will finish this in class tomorrow.

Students also took an Academic Bowl quiz. I’ll use these results to help their teams choose participants for our Olympic Week Academic Bowl.

Please check yesterday’s BLOG for information about students retaking the test on European countries this Thursday.

Homework is to study the European countries if you plan on retaking the test on Thursday.
