What do I need to study for Thursday’s post-test? December 15, 2009

WARM-UP: 12 15 9

  1. We took all science work from the 1st and 2nd quarters out of our binder and organized each assignment by unit. We put it in a folder then stapled it. The staples may not hold because we saved quite a bit of work and that’s okay :) . You only need to keep it until the test Thursday…then I will collect them for safe keeping. You will get it back before CRCT to review!
  2. We discussed the answers for #1-8 on the study guide. Those of you with complete and thoughtful answers have already earned 1 point of extra credit that will be added to your post-test grade! 1 more point will be added tomorrow for #9-17.
STUDY GUIDE:
If you can answer these questions, you will do fantastic on the post-test!
What chapters do I need to review?
Chapters: 3, 4, 7, and 10
Review the summaries for each section in the listed chapters 
DUE TUESDAY:
1) Name the physical layers of Earth.
2) Name the compositional layers of Earth. About what percentage of Earth does each layer takes up?
3) Name the 3 types of plate boundary movement. What stress force causes them? What geological event is created?
4) How does fossil evidence support Wegener’s theory of continental drift?
5) What are the 4 characteristics that a mineral must have to be a mineral? Describe them.
6) Describe the difference between a silicate and non-silicate mineral.
7) Describe how a mineralogist uses the Moh’s hardness scale to determine a mineral’s hardness.
8) How do sedimentary rocks form in the rock cycle? (must explain in detail using the words WEATHERING and EROSION).
DUE WEDESDAY:
9) How do metamorphic rocks form in the rock cycle? (must explain in detail using the words HEAT and PRESSURE).
10) How do igneous rocks form in the rock cycle? (must explain in detail using the words MELTING and COOLING).
11) What is the difference between an intrusive igneous rock and extrusive igneous rock? What does grain size mean?
12) What is the difference between foliated and non-foliated metamorphic rocks? What causes foliation?
13) What are the 3 types of sedimentary rocks? How are each of them formed?
14) What is the difference between weathering and erosion?
15) What is the difference between uplift and subsidence?
16) What happens at mid-ocean ridges?
17) What are tectonic plates and which layer of Earth would you find them?

Advanced) I wasnted to post the Rock Star composition checklist but I can’t find it on my school computer. I will look at home!
