Sixth Grade Language Arts Bulletin

Monday, February 8

Classes met in the PC Lab today.  Students were assigned the task of creating a graphic organizer for a compare-contrast writing assignment.  Students were to select the approach:   point by point, or similarities to differences, or whole to whole.  Once an approach was determined,  students began creating the graphic organizer using Word.  The graphi organizer is due Friday.  We will resume work on the organizer in class Wednesday for the first three classes and tomorrow for the fourth period class.

Thanks and have a great evening.

Thursday, February 4

After completing the assigned reading, students completed Venn diagrams comparing Lottie to Bess, Ant to Grasshopper, Cats to Dogs, and Apples to Oranges.

The Take Home Assessments are due Monday.

The Take-Home Assessment was due today.  We read Ant and the Grasshopper, Aesop’s fable and The Richer, The Poorer by Dorothy West, a Harlem Renaissance writer.  We created a chart comparing key traits, actions and words, and character priority for the Ant and the Grasshopper.

Review your DGP sentence and the grammar notes.

Cultural Arts Night is Coming

Cultural arts night is all about learning about different cultures.  The event will be held on February 11th at 7:00 pm.  If you would like to help with the event there are two different ways for you to contribute.  You can set up and man a table about your own culture or you can help with one of the nine culture tables from our Olympic nations.  Please e-mail Patty Reinhardt if you would like more information or would like to help. Thank you in advance for your help and support.

Wednesday, January 27

Students received the study guide for the test Friday.  We viewed a video on writing a compare contrast essay.  We modeled the prewriting step by creating a graphic organizer comparing milk to apple juice.  We will continue to explore expository writing tomorrow.  In addition, we will have a review activity during class tomorrow for the test Friday.

I would like to encourage each student to create flash cards or use the Cornell note system to prepare for the test.

Tuesday, January 26

We took notes on comparison-contrast essays, another form of expository writing.

If you did not complete this assignment in class, please do so tonight for homeowork.

Compare and contrast a pencil to a pen.  Write one sentence to introduce the topic, one sentence to explore the similarities, and one sentence to explore the   differences.

Don’t forget to work on the DGP sentence.

Read and log!
