Congratulations, we have successfully completed another school year. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for allowing me to teach your child this year. Do you know a teacher who deserves recognition for his or her hard work and dedication to making a difference in student’s lives? Well now is your chance to make that happen!

Sixteen Georgia teachers will be selected as an Atlanta Falcons Heroes in the Classroom presented by Symetra Financial for their outstanding leadership and instruction. Winners will receive a $1,000 donation to their school, two tickets to a 2010 Atlanta Falcons home game, a VIP sideline experience at the Georgia Dome as well as recognition at school and on field during game day!

Who is eligible? All K-12 teachers in the state of Georgia.

Who can nominate?

Current or former students of a nominated teacher
Parents of current or former students of a nominated teacher
Coworker of a nominated teacher
Current or former principal of a nominated teacher
School district staff

What are the criteria for selecting Heroes? Hero selection is based on a teacher’s ability to: balance the core curriculum with students’ individual needs; build trust among students, parents and the community; and invest in their students’ long-term success.

When does it start? Nominations will be accepted starting May 3, 2010. The first Falcons home game is Sept. 19 against the Arizona Cardinals. The sooner the nominations are submitted, the more opportunity your favorite teacher has to be a winner!

We read “The All American Slurp” in the literature book. Students completed the selection questions.

Remember, the reading requirement is due May 14th.

We read “Jeremiah’s Song” by Walter Dean Myers and discussed selected questions within the text. Students reviewed dialogue and first-person narration.

Students should keep all response questions to the literature in a safe place. An open notes literature test is scheduled for Friday, May 14.

Students completed the following assignment.

Research shows that the average American watches as much as six hours of television each day. Do you think this is too much? Create a newspaper ad convincing readers to spend less time in front of the TV.

Many people believe that television violence has a negative effect on society because it promotes violence. Create an ad to start a campaign against television violence. Use specific reasons and examples to support your response.

Classwork: Read “No Thought of Reward” by Mawi Asgedom (pages 910-911). Students responded to questions A, B and C in the selection, questions 1-3 and 9 on page 912. Students must complete the following assignment for class tomorrow.

•Pretend that you are hosting a celebration. Your job is to convince your friends that their money will be better spent helping people who need it rather than buying gifts for someone like you who already has enough of everything any person could desire.

•Design an invitation and include a section explaining your feelings to friends. You may wish to write a poem or a persuasive paragraph.
