Course Outline
The Language Arts program for Cobb County is a literature-based program designed to develop students’ skills in reading, writing, listening/speaking/viewing, and critical thinking. The 6th grade Language Arts course outline follows the standards from the Writing Course Guide, the Reading Course Guide, and the State of Georgia Performance Standards (GPS).
The sixth-grade curriculum is divided into seven units: narrative writing, technical writing, expository writing, persuasive writing, analyzing/creating nonfiction texts, response to literature and mythology writing.
Reading Expectations
Cobb County students are expected to read a total of 25 books a year (approximately 1,000,000 words!). To meet this standard, each student will independently read 450 pages and two separate genres per nine weeks. Each student is responsible for providing evidence that their reading goals are being met. Differentiated options for providing evidence will be shared each nine week period starting with a basic reading log (same as summer reading log) during the first nine weeks of the year. Specific due dates and options will be given at the beginning of each 9 weeks.

Late homework assignments are defined as items not in the classroom when the assignment is evaluated. Missing assignments may receive a grade of 50. Missing assignments are defined as assignments not handed in to the teacher.
If the student is absent on the day the assignment is given, he/she will have the amount of days missed to make up missed work. It is the student’s responsibility to request and turn in missing assignments within the allotted time.
If the student is absent on the day something is due but was in class when assigned, it is to be turned in immediately upon returning to school.
When an assignment and/or test is announced before a student’s absence, it is the student’s responsibility to be prepared for that test and/or assignment the day he/she returns to school.
Assignments will be posted daily on the blog and in the classroom to help students remain up-to-date and informed.
Behavior Expectations
All students are expected to adhere to the McClure Middle School Behavior Management plan, ACTS. In addition, students are expected to abide by the Cobb County School District’s “J” Policies listed in the student agenda.
