Woodwinds will need to have at least four playable reeds at all times, brass players need to have valve oil at all times, percussionists need to have their mallet bag with the required sticks, and mallets. Failure to have one of these items will severely affect a student’s daily participation grade. Please check the list below for the required materials for your student. Welcome to the McClure Middle School Band Program! Students need no prior musical experience to be a member of the Beginning Band class. The class is for sixth grade students who have never before played a band instrument. Students will learn how to produce a good sound on the instrument, all of the necessary fingerings for the notes on the instrument, how to read music, and how to perform together as an ensemble. Students will perform several concerts this year to demonstrate their progress.
During this first week of band class, we will assist students in choosing the instrument that they wish to play and that they will be successful at playing. We will work individually with each student and allow him/her to try to produce a sound on each of the instruments. We will recommend the instruments that we feel will be the most successful for your child. Physical features such as hand size, size and shape of the lips and over-bite/under -bite of the teeth will cause a person to be more successful on particular instruments. The ultimate decision will be made by the student. We ask students to consider the sound of the instrument that they enjoy the most, as well as our recommendations as to which instruments will be the most successful for them. Once this process is completed, we will give the student a large white envelope listing the instrument chosen, as well as any supplies needed for the instrument. The envelope also includes brochures from local Music Stores and the 6th grade band handbook (lists everything your child needs). When your student brings home the envelope, you are ready to visit the music store! We hope to conclude this process within two weeks.
PLEASE WAIT TO GO TO THE MUSIC STORE UNTIL YOUR CHILD BRINGS HOME THE LARGE WHITE ENVELOPE.
