Media Center… Standards… Classroom…: Working Together to Increase Student Acheivement
With this being our last month to broadcast, the students took time off to brainstorm the final presentations. On Friday, March 5th the news team interviewed the school’s Odyssey of the Mind team before their regional competition. All members of the OoTM team as well as the coach, Mrs. Rhodes, were interviewed.

Shaye and Riley interviewed Mrs. Parks, the PTA president about our Valentines dance. Unfortunately, the dance has been cancelled due to inclement weather. Nevertheless, please tune in for their great report.
On Friday, February 5th the news team did a great report on our Destiny Online Catalog system. After the weekly library lesson on on the online catalog, Riley decided to share his knowledge with the rest of the students. Shaye was unable to attend due to inclement weather, so Caleb substituted. Please click below to see this informative report.

The news team decided to do a special tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Riley presented information on Dr. King while Shaye and Jordan anchored the show. The students worked very well under pressure as we had very little time to prepare. Let’s see how well they performed:
Our 2009-10 WLAM News Team performed their first morning broadcast today. The students did a wonderful job of coming up with the concept of interviewing our music teacher Mr. Frisbie and presenting the chorus’ performance at the city’s tree lighting. All of the crew worked really hard on their individual roles, so we hope that you enjoy it.

EQ: How do I become a Royal Reader?
The students will be introduced to a new reading incentive program called Royal Readers. This will be held in conjunction with Accelerated Reader.
With this new program, when students meet their AR goals, they will be invited to join the Royal Reader club. Students will have their name announced on the morning announcements, will be able to eat lunch on the stage, and will receive a Royal Reader sash to wear throughout the day, designating them as Royal Readers. They will also receive a free kids meal certificate for Stevi B’s. The students with the most points at the end of the year will be named Accelerated Reader King and Accelerated Reader Queen. They will each receive a cape and a scepter and will be crowned at the Awards Day at the end of the year. Please see Mrs. Mitchell in the media center for more information.
First Grade:
SS1H1: Historical figures: The student will read about and describe the life of historical figures in American history.
Element: SS1H1.a-Identify the contributions made by Harriet Tubman;
Element: SS1H1.b-Describe how everyday life of these historical figures is similar to and different from everyday life in the present (food, clothing, homes, transportation, communication, recreation).
Our First Graders are beginning a study of Harriet Tubman. Using the text: Moses: When Harriet Tubman Led Her People to Freedom students will discuss the contributions of Harriet Tubman and those who helped on the Underground Railroad, the impact of slavery, and the use of spirituals.
Element: ELAKR6.a Comprehension: Listens to and reads a variety of literary (e.g., short stories, poems) and informational texts and materials to gain knowledge and for pleasure.
Kindergarten:
Our Kindergarten students have completed their review of the Georgia Picture Book Awards Nominees and have selected their favorite book: I Ain’t Gonna Paint No More by Karen Beaumont. We will read some more of her books and discover more about her as an author, her writing style, and the motivation behind her writings.
The student will read about and describe the life of historical figures in American history.
Element: SS1H1.a-Identify the contributions made by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark with Sacagawea (exploration);
Element: SS1H1.b-Describe how everyday life of these historical figures is similar to and different from everyday life in the present (food, clothing, homes, transportation, communication, recreation).
Our First Graders are wrapping up our study of Lewis and Clark. After studying the lives of the explorers through the Essential Question (Why do we study about Lewis and Clark?) students will go on an “Expedition” much like the explorers. Students will take on roles of members of the Corps of Discovery, animals, and Native Americans as we take a virtual expedition. They will also enjoy Sacajawea’s Pemmican as found in Seaman’s Journal.
Kindergarten:
