AP HG Pre-Lab Assignment

KUBY – HUMAN GEO IN ACTION

This is homework for Thursday.  We will be in the lab on Thursday to work out of the Kuby (Human Geography in Action) book, but you need to do some reading and complete the following assignement before you can begin.

1. Read the Introduction (pages 333-337) to “Do Orange and Green Clash” .  Take notes as you read on any new information or any new words that you come across.

2. Next, read the case study about Northern Ireland and Ireland that begins on page 338.  As you read you need to make a mind map of the situation in Ireland on which you will take your notes and create a summary of what you have read. FOLLOW ALL OF THE STEPS BELOW

  • Draw Ireland on a sheet of paper. Divide Northern Ireland from Ireland. This is the beginning of your mind map.  You may add other graphics as you wish.  Information about N.Ireland should obviously be listed near or in N.Ireland and vice versa for Ireland (south)
  • Define the following as you come across them in the reading: I.R.A., plantation system, tenant farmers, spacial division, and spacial convergence.
  • Take notes on your mind map of Ireland as you read.  Similar to a body biography, I want you to visually explain what is going on in between N.Ireland and Ireland.  Get creative.  Take notes, but visual create a mind map (this means it is up to you how you visually represent the information).
  • Be sure to differentiate between N.Ireland and Ireland.
  • You must have at least 10 icons/notes on your mind map (this does NOT include the vocab above)
  • When you are finished , you will answer the question at the end of the reading in paragraph form.
  • This is part of your lab and is required to be completed BEFORE you may begin the lab.

World Geo – Human Rights Poster

HUMAN RIGHTS IN AFRICA  POSTER PROJECT     Now that you have a definition and a concept of human rights, your mission will be to make a human rights poster and get the word out about what is going on in Africa.

FIRST: To do this you first need to focus on an area of human rights in Africa that is important to you… child labor, genocide, blood diamonds, child soldiers, Darfur, famine, AIDS in Africa, malaria, etc. Look at your notes for different ideas.

SECOND: Do Research: take notes on the issue, be sure to get some basic facts and statistics

            – websites attached

Now that you have researched and know what your poster will focus on, your poster needs to include all of the following:

  1. A human rights slogan that fits your cause. Example: if you were doing child labor, you might use something like “Child labor is wrong labor”. THIS IS A SLOGAN YOU NEED TO COME UP WITH … DO NOT JUST TAKE SOMETHING FROM THE INTERNET.
  2. Pictures .. your poster needs pictures that show the viewer why it is an issue that needs immediate attention. You can draw these yourself, use photos from a magazine, or the internet, or even use a political cartoon. Do something that catches the attention of people and draws them to your cause.
  3. A short paragraph (5-7 sentences) telling the reader why this is an issue, where in Africa it is happening, and why something needs to be done. Again, look on the internet and find organizations that are focused on your cause. Be sure to cite specific violations of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
  4. Give contact information. Include a website or information for an organization that has information on the cause in case someone wants to get involved after they see your poster.
  5. Your poster must be on something other than standard paper. You can use poster board, construction paper, cardboard, or card stock. Your poster does not have to be huge (1/2 of a poster board is ideal), but remember it is a poster and your classmates need to be able to see it!!
  6. All posters will be posted in the room and possibility in the hallway when finished, so do your best work! GO ABOVE AND BEYOND!!
