Let’s Cook Playdoh

February 27th, 2008

Download playdough.ppt Toddlers and preschoolers alike enjoy playing with playdough. As an ending to our Child Development unit, the students cooked playdough in the Kithen Labs. Students realized what a great creative experience for young children as well as a way to help them use their small muscles and quiet down at the same time. In addition to cooking playdough, I shared several fingerplays and rhymes with the students. Many agreed the activities would be helpful dealing with younger siblings as well as when babysitting.

Sewing

February 27th, 2008

We are off to sewing! Students are to bring in two bandanas or 1/2 yard of fabric that they will sew into a square pillow. The pillows will be sewn using the classroom sewing machines. Before beginning the pillow, the students will construct a pincushion using clean gatorade caps and a circle of fabric. This simple hand stitching project gives each student a chance to practice tying a knot, using the running stitch, and gathering a small piece of fabric. The pincushion is filled with a small amount of polyfill and then placed in the cap that has glue around the inner edges. The pincushions will be used at hold straight pins when your student is sewing at the machine.

Homework

February 27th, 2008

Hello everyone. I assigned three different homework assignments. The students and I discussed each one. The three are as follows: 1. Home Cooking Assignment, 2. Home Laundry Assignment, and 3. Young Child Learning Toy. Each student is to prepare, serve, and cleanup one recipe that has four or more ingredients. A copy of the recipe is to be attached to the parent signature form and turned in to me before the end of the nine weeks. Each student is to wash, dry, fold, and put away two loads of family laundry. One load should be darks and one load should be whites. The student’s work will be evaluated by parents using a form supplied by me. Parents will sign the form and turn in to me. The third homework assignment is to construct a learning toy for a young child that uses throwaway materials. Students are to bring in the toy and tell how the toy works and how it benefits the learning development of the young child. Some learning toy suggestions are: mobiles, sock balls, matching and concentration games, homemade books, and puzzles made from cereal boxes.
