Fabric, where are you?

January 21st, 2009

Many students still need to bring in one yard of a washable, cotton fabric. The fabric must measure 45" wide by 36" long. The rectangle of fabric can measure larger, but not smaller. In place of buying fabric, a clean sheet, tablecloth, or even curtains make good substitutes. This fabric is the only supply needed for the sewing project that is required and counts as a major test grade in FACS. The completed pillowcase sewing project for 6th graders will resemble this: Download Wbnpillowcase and the apron sewing project for 7th and 8th graders will resemble this:View this photo Please contact me if there are any questions, concerns, or even "pats on the back!"

Study Guide for Career Pathways

January 13th, 2009

We are finishing our study about career pathways using a variety of instructional strategies. Students viewed a short video concerning career clusters and how to identify where one might enjoy a career. As students listened and watched the video, they took notes which were turned in before leaving the class. The announcement was at the beginning and the end of each class that a test over the video, textbook, and Game of Life material pertaining to careers will take place at the beginning of Friday’s class, Jan. 16th. Going over the study guide and reviewing the vocabulary written in each day’s agenda will give students a complete composite of the material covered. I am uploading the study guide in two different formats as some students do not have Microsoft Word on their home computers. Also, I am posting today’s opener.Download Day6.ppt Download Ch4StudyGuide.doc Download Ch4StudyGuide.rtf Let me know if any questions. Remember to bring in 1 yard of cotton type fabric before Jan. 21st! No fleece, no knits, and no slippery type fabric. The 7th and 8th graders will construct an apron to wear when working in the food labs. The 6th graders will construct a pillowcase (flannel is okay for this project).

New Technology and Day 3

January 8th, 2009

Ask the FACS students about the newest in combination sewing/embroidery machines available in our classroom. Awesome! This machine comes with two usb ports, mouse, touch screen, ability to download embroidery designs from a computer or a thumbdrive and has many built-in fonts and Disney characters. Now all I need is to devise a rotation system for small groups of students to experience this new technology. More about that in a later post. Download day_3.ppt

Day Two and Fabric

January 8th, 2009

Each students needs to bring in 1 yard (36" x 45") of cotton type fabric before Jan. 21st. Please, NO FLEECE, knits, or satin-type fabric! The fabric must be clean, but does not need to be new. Repurposing is a great way to get additional use out of those curtains or a tablecloth that just doesn’t go with the home decor anymore. The 6th grade students will construct a pillowcase while the 7th and 8th graders will construct an apron. Each 7th and 8th grade student will wear their apron during their scheduled kitchen lab activity. Did you know that wearing a clean apron is one of the requirements of preparing food in a safe and sanitary manner? Download Day2.ppt

Welcome to FACS!

January 8th, 2009

Family and Consumer Sciences is also known as "FACS." Some still refer to FACS as Home Ec even though this emphasis has changed over the years from being mainly a skills based class to one that integrates reading and math comprehension on a daily basis. With that in mind, FACS supports the McClure School Improvement goals throughout the entire nine weeks which has proven to help students increase their CRCT scores.

I plan to post to my blog several times a week what students are doing in class. Students view a Daily Powerpoint which gives them the daily class plan, vocabulary word or math problem or study guide question with the answer or other instructional activities, essential question, homework, etc. and other needed information. As a part of individual responsibility, absent students must check the blog for missed classwork and other information. If Microsoft PowerPoint is not on your home computer, please follow this link to download Open Office which is free to view the ppt’s I post, http://download.openoffice.org/index.html

Read over the syllabus Download syllabus08091.doc , detach the bottom portion, sign, and have your student return it to me by this Friday, Jan. 9. Each grade level class that has all signed syllabi returned will receive a sweet treat prepared by me.

Please email me if you have any questions, praise, concerns, etc.
