What’s Math Got To Do With It?

March 31st, 2009

Math is definitely part of the everyday world. Most of us think in words and others think in symbols. Instead of saying or writing "plus" or "minus", one can can simplify the communication process by writing the sign for either one. Family and Consumer Sciences uses math quite a bit. Mental geometry happens when a student places a sewing pattern on fabric. A 2-D model happens when the pattern is pined to the fabric and then cut out. The resulting shape resembles the paper pattern. Then by manipulating the fabric shape with strategically placed thread lines, the fabric shape evolves to 3-D. This new geometry model can fit a predetermined amount of mass; example: a pillowcase or an apron. Quilters use linear math to construct wearable clothing and home furnishings. Take a moment and think about how many different ways math is used in a favorite sport, watching tv, maintenance of the main family car, grocery shopping, and others that come to mind. Math has a lot to do with sewing and later on in FACS, food preparation!
