Homework Due March 11, 2010

Students have two homework assignments that are hands-on and need parent verification. Every student was given a double sided hard copy of both assignments. One assignment is for the individual student to prepare, serve, and clean up a recipe of their choosing. The second assignment is for the student to completely take care of two loads of laundry. Again, both assignments must be graded with parent signature by their parent(s). Please help your child turn in to me their completed homework by March 11th. Thanks!

Recipes and Food Preparation

All classes are anticipating this unit because they get to eat whatever they cook! Before students go into the kitchen labs and prepare a recipe, they must learn about food safety as well as kitchen safety. In addition, students must understand how to read and interpret a recipe so the finished product is a quality one worth repeating.

CRAFTS CLUB NEWS

The Crafts Club students meet at least twice a month; the 1st and 3rd Monday morning at 8:00 in the FACS room with Mrs. Gingras and Mrs. Utz. The students help each other out as they construct their pajama pants or pajama shorts. Many of these sewers have discovered how much they enjoy the process and are eager to meet more often. One of the next projects will make use of recycled fabrics; more about that at a later date.

Sewing Projects on Display

Students turned in their completed sewing projects. Many of the eighth graders utilized the embroidery machine by choosing three letters to embroider on their finished apron or pillowcase. As a result of the sewing and textile unit, students have mastered a skill that will stay with them for a lifetime. Mending, doing laundry, and routine maintaince of clothing is a needed skill for now and later on in professional life.

A Sewing We Go!

Students are ready to try out the sewing machines. Students have read and answered questions about the sewing process and viewed the video, “See and Sew.” Now students are ready to get in some practice at the sewing machines. They will sew on paper without any thread. Next they will practice on scrap fabric and learn how to thread their machine. Then they will sew their project.

Crafts Club

The Crafts Club sewers decided to make flannel pj’s for their next sewing project. Due to schools being closed on February 15, we will meet in the FACS classroom at 8:00 am on Monday, February 8th. If you have not brought in your fabric (washed and dried), please bring it with you for Monday’s meeting. See you then!

Caring for Clothing Test!

Students have studied the how’s and the why’s of clothing care. Today was an intensive review of the textbook and dvd material. Tomorrow is the test. The link posted should take you to a copy of the study guide. All students were given their worksheet packet as well as a copy of the study guide. After everyone completes the short test tomorrow, students will complete marking their sewing project with a 1/2″ seamline. Next week will have students learning sewing machine vocabulary, practice sewing, and finally, sewing the fabric project!Study Guide for Caring for Clothing_1

Fabric is Due

Please remember to bring in your one yard of woven fabric by Monday, January 24th. We will begin our Sewing unit at that time. Knit and Fleece fabrics are not user-friendly for beginning sewers.

Food Preparation in the FACS Kitchens!

Students will experience their first cooking on Wednesday. Kool-Aid Slushies are the recipe used to make sure students thoroughly understand the correct measuring techniques as well as when to use the liquid measuring cup, the dry measuring cups, and measuring spoons. Then we are on to baking and decorating Chocolate Chip Cookies. Students are excited!

0910LaundryHomework Here we are winding down the nine weeks. Time has flown by! This second nine weeks will end December 18th. The second homework assignment is for students to completely take charge of cooking a dish following a recipe, serving it to family members, and cleaning up. Parents are to grade this assignment following the grading guide on the assignment sheet. Students are to turn in the graded form or parents can fax it to me at school (678-331-8132) or email it to me at kathy.gingras@cobbk12.org. PLEASE remember a complete recipe with four or more ingredients must be followed and a copy attached to the Food Preparation sheet. The third homework assignment for FACS students is to do two loads of family laundry; sort, wash, dry, fold, and put away.
