Look What We Are Doing!!

The sewing machines are revved and students are actually working on their project. Working with the students reminds me of how much hand-eye coordination as well as sequencing processes are taking place. Students discover that sewing is not easy nor is sewing difficult. Sewing is focusing and keeping several tasks aligned at the same time. I am proud of my students as they work to complete their own pillowcase or apron.
Textiles, Fibers, and Sewing Project
Monday was the due date for students to bring in their one yard of fabric (36″ x 45″). Each student will watch a demonstration of how to properly fold their fabric and then pin the pillowcase or apron pattern to the fabric. The next step for the students is to cut the fabric to have the same shape of the paper pattern. On Wednesday, students will mark the sewing lines on their fabric. This requires every student to correctly identify 1/2 inch on a ruler, position the ruler on the fabric, and then mark the fabric exactly that distance from the edge of the fabric. This is a real-world application of math!

We have studied the ages and stages of young children from birth through age eight. Along with this study, students viewed Safety First Babysitting and took notes using the Cornell notetaking method. Then students worked in cooperative groups to make a concept map of all the child development information. As a final cumulation of learning as well as a major assessment, each student was to take the information and develop a project showing me what was learned. The students and I discussed creative ways to showcase their learning. The list of choices included: a powerpoint, an ABC Book, a skit or video, a drawing or poster, a brochure, a game, a toy, a dance, a song, a poem, a crossword puzzle, a comic strip, or a puppet show. Many of the projects turned in are quite creative, detailed, and original.

Food Safety and Sanitation is on our minds this week. We have watched Dr. X as he shared important information with us. A reading of chapter 27 in our FACS textbook with answering questions and viewing the Science and Our Food Supply dvd has given students a greater awareness of our food supply.Students learned that food between 40 and 140 degrees is not safe to eat as food pathogens multiply rapidly at those temperatures. Ask your child what the 4 C’s are. For fun and review, have your child go to this website and review for our test tomorrow as they play the game; http://www.fooddetectives.com/
Tomorrow is College Color Day. Wear a teeshirt celebrating your favorite college.

7th and 8th graders were given a review of how to use the Cornell Method of taking notes. 6th graders were given a demonstration of how to use this method of quickly taking notes. The Nutrition dvd we are using for the nutrition portion of our standard gives information quickly. To help students watch, listen, and think about the new information, we will view this short video twice. We will share our notes and discuss the information tomorrow.
