We finished reading chapter 3 today and completed questions to chapters 1, 2 and 3. If you did not finish and took your work home, below are the questions for you to answer. A couple of things to remember: First, this is due tomorrow and second, study for your vocabulary quiz!
Chapter 1:
1. What kind of person is Grandfather? How do you know?
2. Why must Sookan hide the fact that Grandfather is teaching her Korean and Chinese?
3. What do you think life is like for the sock girls? Why?
4. Why doesn’t Captain Narita allow Sookan’s family to keep a flower garden?
Chapter 2:
1. Why is Mother willing to “risk almost anything” to see Theresa?
2. Why is chopping down the pine tree the best way for the Japanese to punish Grandfather?
3. Why does Sookan worry when Grandfather says he no longer needs his shoes?
Chapter 3:
1. What does the little wooden box represent?
2. Why do you think Mother never wanted to tell Sookan and Inchun about their family history and the hard times they endured?
3. What do you think causes Grandfather to die?
4. Discuss what Grandfather meant when he told Sookan “Harmony will prevail.” Do you think Grandfather’s prediction is correct? Why or why not?
