Classwork:

Today, the genetic’s TEST results were examined. How did you fair? Class averages ranged between an 80% and an 85%…GREAT JOB! (I think most of you know how to do a punnett square and analyze your results:)

Today we discussed selective breeding and student’s participated in an on-line lab to determine if tigers could be bred for disease resistant genes. Complete the lab results and conclusion for homework. Student’s that needed some remediation worked on the Bikini Bottom genetics 2 sheet and are to complete this for homework.

You may have heard that there is a t-shirt sales campaign going on at McClure and not know the background of the ”why”.  At McClure, we have several students dealing with significant medical issues (among those cancer and organ transplant needs).  We as a school community wanted to reach out to help those families and to show our support for them financially and visually.

Each advisement group was asked to develop a theme – one line – that would show visual support for these students as we wear the shirts, but also generate conversation about why we are wearing them.  Each advisement group submitted suggestions and the student body as a whole chose the winning theme “got hope?”

We are currently selling the t-shirts for $10 or a bracelet that says got hope? for $3.  You can purchase both as a set for $12.  All proceeds from the shirts will be given to these families to meet the additional financial needs that they are incurring.  The families may choose to give the funds to the charity of their choice if they personally don’t need the funds.  One of the families has been assisted tremendously by the Rally Foundation and may earmark the funds they receive for that organization.

This is a time where we can all step out and make a personal difference to students at our school.  We hope that you will purchase a shirt and talk to your friends and neighbors about purchasing one as well to help these families!  The shirts are on sale for the next few days and are available in black with white print, black with hot pink print and brown with turquoise print.  Checks may be made payable to McClure Middle School PTSA.

Continue working on your Creative Dihybrid Stories..they are due on Thursday, 3/11. Make sure you keep up with your portfolio. I went through and did a check today and most of you are in good shape. Try to make up the items you are missing before they need to be turned in! We will continue with punnett squares tomorrow, but we will step it up a notch with incomplete and complete dominant situations. (There are always exceptions to the rules!)

  I will not collect notebooks until after we are finished with the Genetics Unit..we are only half way done….DNA is next.

Today we took an open note quiz over Punnett Squares to measure our progress.  We finished up our Genetics Station Rotation. Remember, you need to complete 6 out of the 9 stations.  If you are missing any, you need to finish for homework.  The website for Dragon 1 & 2 are to the right of the blog under the Genetics Subheading. Here are some more stations if you need them:

Today we read the “modified “ lyrics to the song “I’m My Own Grandpa” and created a pedigree of the narrator’s family. We then watched Bill Nye’s “Genetics Greatest Discoveries” video . Students had to note what scientific contributions were made and who made them. The GENETICS EXAM is tomorrow. Be sure to study everything in your Genetics Portfolio:)

Classwork:  We continued rotating through our stations.  You may work on the on-line station “ Dragon Genetics 1 & 2″ at home to make up for any lost time. There will be a Genetics QUIZ on Monday. Make sure you know how to do a punnett square, determine phenotypic and genotypic ratios, and study your T/F Anticipation Guide.
