Problem Solving and Sickness!

Sick5[1]
Ok, in a class of seventeen students if two of you are home sick and another two of you go home sick that's pretty dramatic!  Josh, Zach, Kayla and Todd- get better soon!  To those of you who were here with aches and pains and the blahs….hope you get better soon too!

If you weren't in class today, you will need to make up the equation writing quiz.

For homework, complete page 320 from the packet, problems 1-7.  These are just some fun problem solving situations.  Logic and common sense are the way to go to get the right answers!  There is also some great review of Venn Diagrams and Tree Diagrams.

Have a good night!

Thrifty G-Dawg

Saving-money-during-hard-financial-times-01-af
Extravagant Elmo and Thrifty G-Dawg each have bank
accounts. Elmo has $500 and G-Dawg has $200.  Elmo
withdraws $15 each weekend while G-Dawg deposits $12. At the
end of 13 weeks, what is the difference in their bank
accounts? Solve this algebraically. Can you find a week when
there is only a $3 difference? Hint: It is before
the 13th week.

Parallel and Perpendicular

Parallel_line_optical_illusions
You learned how to determine if lines are parallel or perpendicular.  Remember:

  • Parallel Lines- have the same slope.
  • Perpendicular Lines- their slopes are negative reciprocals of each other.

To practice, please complete the following from the packet we started in class earlier in the week:

  • page 315 (1-30, 38-46)

Have a great night!
Mr. G

P.S.  Several of you have asked for the website that created the cool art work that we looked at in class last week.  Click on the link to access the site.

Coming up:  Quiz tomorrow on writing equations of lines, test on linear equations on Monday.

Note about the photo:  Are the red lines parallel?

Carter, Madison, and Kayla- we missed you today, hope you are back soon!

ONLY ONE PROBLEM FOR HOMEWORK????

Dan_zanes_1
What's up with that????

For homework complete number 37 from the worksheet that was handed out yesterday.  It is a very complex problem so work carefully!

For those of you wondering what the picture has to do with this posting?  I googled the number 1 (for one problem, the title) and couldn't find a picture of the number 1.  This is the craziest picture that I could find, so I put it in!

Have a great night!
Mr. G

Writing the Equation of a Line

You've done such a good job graphing equations, that we decided to switch things up a bit.  Today you wrote the equations for the lines give information about the graph.

For homework, please complete (worksheet):

  • page 307 (2-60, evens)

Some of the more advanced problems are going to require some independent thought so be carefuL!
See you tomorrow!
Mr. G

Superbowl Weekend!

This weekend’s problem solving project is football related.

PittsburghSteelers_Electric
In their goal to get first down during a play, the Steelers ran the ball one half as far as they did during the second play.  The second down moved the ball as far as the third play.   The third down was23
three times as much as the fourth play.  How many yards did each play move the ball if the entire run was a total of 17 yards?

Can you get the answer before half time?

Parallel Lines in a Parallel Universe

Parallel-lines
Parallel lines have the same slope.

I hope you saw that pattern in the problems that started your homework assignment today.  Make sure you complete the following from the worksheet I gave you in class today:

  • page 303 (40-62, 70)

The first section contains an important pattern about parallel lines that you will need to know for future reference!
Have a great weekend, check back tomorrow for the restart of weekend problem solving.  I am going to write the post and set it to appear at midnight right now so it really will get done this weekend!

Oh, and here is a message from Ms. Haggard for the MathCount folks:  She and Ms. Ryan would love to see you on Monday until 5:15 and Tuesday until 5:30 for practice. Snacks will be provided!

Slope-Intercept Saves the Day

Nicholas_Diary_graph
You learned how to graph using the slope intercept form of the line today.  This will save you hours of work when it comes to graphing!

To practice, complete the following from your Algebra books:

  • page 244 (22-45 evens)

Have a great night,
Mr. G

Can you run before you get out of bed in the morning?

Img_5835
There's a question for you!  Is it possible to go running before you get out of bed in the morning?  Apparently, this young man thinks so!

For those of us in the real world though, we have to get out of bed before you can run.

That sentence is how you can remember that slope is defined as:

rise
run

You also learned the slope formula which says:

y1-y2
x1-x2

For homework, please complete the following from your Algebra books:

  • page 230 (12-37)

The quiz that I threatened to give you today will be on Monday!

Have a great weekend, please remember to check back over the weekend for a special problem in honor of Alec's birthday!

Mr. G

Finishing up Intercepts

Broncos_logo_small
In class today, we finished working on x and y intercepts and that's what your homework deals with.  After the new material we reviewed your work on the unit five test.  If you still think you are having trouble with the material let me know and I will get some extra practice for you.

If you have not completed a USATestPrep medium test yet please do so as soon as possible.  I've updated grades in iParent so if you have a zero you need to see me about a problem or take a test!

For homework, please complete the following:

  • page 221 (35-70, odds)
  • page 223 (71-87)

This work comes from your Algebra books.

Just a little warning for those that are reading this, you never know when you might have a short quiz over graphing linear equations using tables of values or intercepts!

Have a great night!
Mr. G
