Syllabus is subject to change.

Course Content:

In art class, our course of study will focus upon problem-solving, using the elements and principles of design in order to create expressive, but well-organized works of art. We will also focus heavily on basic drawing skills. Students will be exposed to a variety of both two and three-dimensional materials and mediums, and will also have opportunities to write about and discuss their own works, and the works of others.

Grading Procedures:

Major Projects: 50% Participation/Class Work: 50%

All students will be held to high standards of effort and production.

The grading of artwork will be divided into two categories: major projects and class work. Projects are the final evaluation of the student’s ability to demonstrate his/her problem-solving skills as well as mastery of the techniques and ideas learned and practiced in class.  Projects will be graded based upon completion, craftsmanship, and standards which will be outlined on individual rubrics. Each project will be given a specific due date. If the student cannot make the due date based on-class work time, he/she will need to take the project home to complete it. If materials cannot be taken home, the student will need to make an appointment to complete the project before school. Late projects will lose 10 points a day unless prior permission has been given and will be accepted more than a week after the due date.

Class work grades will include exercises practiced in class leading up to larger projects, quizzes, writing assignments and other various class assignments.

The last portion of the student’s grade will be calculated based on participation grades. These grades will be given based on the student’s ability to participate in class work, follow all class procedures, and remain on task. Students are expected to remain on task for the entire period.

Class Materials:

Students will need to bring to class daily: 2 pencils with erasers, and their agendas. No required, but useful, are scissors, rulers, pens, markers, and colored pencils. It is the student’s responsibility to bring all materials to class daily; no personal materials will be stored in the class room. The students’ artwork however, will be stored in the artroom in his/her portfolio.

Blog:

Please visit Sgrignoli’s Artsy Fartsy page for more information on the McClure art program. The syllabus, wish list, and other items of interest are posted. Students should visit the blog regularly for class information, including due dates, make-up work, daily vocabulary, extra credit assignments, and interesting art information.

Make-Up Work:

If absent, students should check the blog for information on what they missed in class, and to copy the daily vocabulary. Make-up work should be completed within the number of days the student was absent, as per Cobb County policy. On the day of a student’s return to class, it is his/her responsibility to check with classmates as well as myself for any work missed and to receive handouts.  These will be available on the blog whenever possible.

Early Finishers:

Students will have early finisher projects to work on at various points during the 9 weeks when they have finished their assigned work before other students.. If a student finishes the early finisher assignment, it is his/her responsibility to obtain instructions for the next assignment. Finishing early is not an excuse for sitting and doing nothing, but rather an opportunity to explore mediums and techniques beyond what other students might have the opportunity to do.
