Multiply and Divide Integers

We started Friday with multiplying and dividing integers. The rules are simple: if the signs are the same – it’s positive. If they are different the answer is negative. We learned a song to help remember.notes song mult integers

On Tuesday we will have a quiz over adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing.  We will practice on Monday reviewing all of these concepts.

Subtracting Integers – Sept 17…

On Friday the 17th, we reviewed subtracting integers in rotating centers. First we did a warm up to see if we understood the concept. Those that did, we allowed to begin a center. The rest worked problems on the board. Then they went to a center. The classes were shorter due to testing, so centers were mostly introduced.

Centers:

Dice:roll red and green dice. Red is negative and Green is positive. Subtract the numbers they roll.

Spinner: Spin two spinners that have mixed positive and negative numbers. Then subtract the numbers the spinner lands on.

Cards: Using a deck of cards, red are negative and black are positive. Subtract the value of the cards.

On Monday, I was out, and it was a shortened day, so I am unsure whether they were able to do the practice worksheets.

Tuesday – No School :)      Have them play their own games to practice subtracting integers.

Wednesday: Rotating Centers. Practice for Quiz (or possible quiz).

Thursday: Quiz on Subtracting Negative Numbers. Begin multiply and divide negatives.

Friday: Continue multiply and divide with integers practice.

September 17 – Subtracting Integers

We continued to work on subtracting integers. Based on the warm up, this concept is still being learned.

HW: different from the agenda. Only Practice A worksheet that we started in class.

September 16 – Subtracting Integers

Today we used a number line to learn how to subtract integers. It is the same as adding negative integers. The only exception is if we are subtracting a negative number. Then it becomes adding a positive. I used the example on the number line of doing a “u-turn” since we have to move to the left to subtract, but then we are still supposed to go to the left for the negative.

Please have them use a number line for the homework. It will make it easier. They can draw one on the paper to use.

3-4 = 3 + -4 = -1          5- (-7) = 5 + (+7) = 12

Sept 15 – Quiz on Adding Integers

Today we reviewed the homework and checked for our errors. Then we took a quiz on adding integers and order of integers.

No Homework. We did not have time to start a new topic because of shortened schedule due to testing.

September 14 – Adding Integers

Today we used tokens to represent positive and negative numbers. We used these to represent our addition problems. We then worked on a worksheet in class. Most of the errors are when the students add a negative number and a positive. They remember to subtract, but forget to follow the rule on whether the answer is negative or positive. “Different signs, subtract – and keep the sign of the bigger number.”

example:  2 + -7 = -5          -3 + 1 = -2       5 + -6 = -1

HW: Worksheet pg 12    Several students did this in class.

Quiz tomorrow

September 11 – zero pairs and adding integers

Today we used visuals to show how a positive and negative can add together to become zero. They “cancel each other.” We then see how many are left over from the positive or negative. We reviewed using the number line to also “see” adding positives and negatives. We then began a worksheet involving larger numbers with integers using our rules for adding integers. Everyone was given a bright pink study guide with the rules.

We discussed how the grading system works for this nine weeks. The first standard (data collection – box n whiskers)counts for 49% of their grade. This new standard will count for 49%. That means that even if they had difficulty with the first unit, their grade can still increase as they show how well they can do on the Rational number unit. They were also encouraged to turn in any work that is incomplete. Pinnacle is updated with current grades.

HW: to enjoy the weekend
