October 29 REVIEW FOR TEST

Test tomorrow – FRIDAY.  Today we studied around the room and checked our answers. I was available for individual assistance. They have a mock test to use to study, as well as study guides and handouts from this unit. If they can do the mock test, they should be fine.Properties with distributive graphic organizer

HW: MOCK TEST STUDY GUIDE                     A1 posttest mock

The answer key is provided so they can practice and then check to see if they got the answers correct. The test will be very similar to this.

October 28 – Simplifying Expressions

We took our quiz from last week, and reworked the problems for more credit.

We continued working on our worksheet with combining variables. They worked in pairs and had manipulatives to help them separate the variables from the numbers. They are to finish this for homework.

We will begin practicing for the test in the coming days.

October 26 & 27 – Simplifying Algebraic Expressions.

October 26 – simplify expressions

We have been learning how to combine like terms (variables that are the same) in problems. We used the example of meals, dessert and candles. You can use variables to represent the kind of meal/dessert, etc and the number show how many of each you need. If you add more food, you would keep track of the items separately. Algebra is combining things that are alike and keeping the different things separate.

We used algeblocks to practice doing problems with combining integers. We will continue doing this on Wednesday.

HW: Changed – NONE

We were scheduled to have the Unit Test on Friday, but don’t think they are ready yet. It will probably be next Tuesday. Study guide coming soon.

CRCT Parent Night

How Can I Help My Child Exceed Standards on the CRCT?

We hope that you will join us on Tuesday night, October 27th at 7:00 PM in the McClure Theater for CRCT Parent Night.  We want to focus on ways that we can work together to ensure that your child not only “meets” standards on the CRCT this spring, but that they exceed standards in all areas possible.

An overview session for all parents will be held in the theater from 7:00-7:20.  Parents will then have the opportunity to attend three mini-sessions of their choice to enhance their child’s success on the CRCT.  The schedule is listed below:

7:25-7:45

7:50-8:10

8:15-8:35

We hope that you will be able to join us for this important evening.  We are asking parents to RSVP so that we can have a copy of your child’s CRCT scores here for you so that you can refer to them during the presentation.  Light snacks will be provided.  Please RSVP to susan.wilson@cobbk12.org by noon on Tuesday, October 27th  indicating your name and the name and grade level of your child.

October 22 Distributive Property

Today we learned how to use the distributive property. The number on the outside of the parenthesis must be multiplied by everything inside the parenthesis.

example:   2(5 + x) = 2(5) + 2(x) = 10 + 2x

October 15 verbal expressions

Today we continued using verbal expressions and changing them into mathematical expressions. They each have a yellow graphic organizer with the words and their mathemetical translation. They were also encouraged to take their worktexts home to help with their homework. It has problems that we worked on in class as well as more word translations.
