February 17 – Direct/Indirect Review – TEST FRIDAY

Study Guide M7A3 Direct Indirect

Practice Combined Direct and Inverse Variation

Notes – Direct indirect missing value

We are working on worksheets that are mixed review. They contain both Direct and Indirect problems.  We have a test on Friday. They need to be able to distiguish between the two types of equations and (x,y) values. They will also have some graphing on the test.

They need to memorize the equations for direct and indirect along with how to find the constant. Review worksheets and guided notes are attached. Practicing these and memorizing the equations is the best and easiest way to do these problems.

REVIEW IN CLASS TOMORROW – with the completed sheet going home tomorrow to study. It is attached, so they can do it again tomorrow night and check their answers. Or you can have them begin tonight.

TEST FRIDAY - The study guide has all the information and type of problems that will be on the test.

HW: 1/2 sheet with problems. The first two (#16 & 17) they are to find the constant by trying both multiplying the numbers and dividing. This will determine whether it is a direct or indirect variation (Direct uses dividing, Indirect uses multiplying).

February 11 – Work and Review

QUIZ TOMORROW – Friday

On indirect variations. They need to be able to find the constant. Put it into an equation and graph. These have been done before with direct variations. However, they now need to know the new equations for indirect. The quiz may possibly be modified from the study guide posted now, if I don’t feel they have all the content on Thursday.  Since we were out on Wednesday, and they did not have much time to practice on Tuesday, we’ll see how well they learn on Thursday.

February 8 & 9 – Indirect Variations

On Monday, we did an exploration worksheet to help discover the equations and constant of an inverse (indirect) variation. They worked on these independently with finding a y value for an equation, finding a constant by multiplying x and y, and by graphing these equations. Their grades are posted.

HW:  Monday was Practice A #3, and #4. They were to multiply x and y for each pair and see if they were all the same (is there a constant).

Today we started to understand the real life situations of an inverse variation. We used the example of having 1 pizza. The more people that come, the less part of the pizza everyone gets. We took notes off a power point.

HW: Practice B, #1,2,3. They are to multiply x and y values and see if there is a constant (the same number).

February 4 – QUIZ

Today we have a substitute. They will take a quiz on direct variations. They were given a practice quiz for homework that is exactly like the quiz. I hope they do well.

The other work they are to do is review sheets on graphing the coordinates and solving equations. These will count toward their Review work category.

We will work on word problems for direct variations on Friday. Monday will begin Indirect Variations.

February 3 – Review for Quiz

QUIZ TOMORROW

We reviewed our homework by letting students put the problems on the board and then check their work. They then were allowed to work in groups of three and complete the Practice A and B worksheet.

They were given a practice quiz for their quiz tomorrow. The answer key is listed here. They can check to see how well they did and hopefully find their errors tonight. They also have a study guide to review and use for the practice quiz.

Each student was also shown their current progress report and grade. They were made aware of any missing assignments and encouraged to bring them in. Extra copies were made available if they needed them.

February 2

We continued to work on Direct Variations. We worked on a worksheet in class. They were allowed to use calculators to determine the division of the value of y with the value of x. They then had to put it in the form of an equation.

Tonight’s homework is exactly like today’s classwork. They were allowed to start it in class. They also have a note sheet that shows step by step how to find the constant and form the equation.

HW: Practice A #3-7 with #8 for extra credit.   #1 and 2 we will work on together in class.

February 1 – Direct Variation Practice

Last week’s paired activity went well on discovering the characteristics of Direct Variations. We took notes on a power point. However, when we tried on Friday to do more tables and find constants, we had difficulty. After grading their paired work as well, we need to do more reinforced work.

Today we will be working on both graphing correctly and solving equations by using coordinate peg boards that allow us to physically move and plot the points. We will also be finding the constant by making fractions of y over x . or y/x  or y divided by x. This seems to be the most difficult concept.

Hope to have a quiz on Thursday of Direct Variations. Attached are some notes. The students will also be given hard copies.

January 27 Direct Variation

I was out again on Monday (my son had some complications after surgery), so they did not get a chance to learn anything new on Monday.

Tuesday and Wednesday they worked in pairs on a worksheet and poster that is designed to help them discover what a direct variation graph looks like and that there is a constant number that is also represented in these equations.

Tomorrow we will present the posters and group discuss what they have discovered. Then we will watch a power point and begin notes on these types of equations and their graphs.

NO HOMEWORK THIS WEEK due to conference schedule. We will be back to our regular routine of warm ups and homework next week.

January 15 – Begin Direct Variation

Today they worked in pairs on a worksheet to help them learn about Direct Variation. It involved graphing and using a table to find the values of y for an equation. This is similar to what we have been doing. We will be developing more ideas from this data.

I will be out all of next week (the kids know this and that my son has to have surgery). They will be working on review worksheets involving what we have been doing this unit, as well as some problems from earlier this year. They have been informed that these will be graded and put in the “Review” category in the grade book. I am not grading on completion, but of accuracy. These are great CRCT type of problems. We have been working towards eliminating answers that are not logical, as well as doing the computations to solve the problems. This will also reinforce those goals.

We will continue with Direct and Indirect Variations beginning January 25.

NOTE: Conference week is January 25th. This will be an early release week. If you have not returned your child’s conferenece sheet confirming whether you can come to conference, please do so.

January 13 Quiz on Coordinate Planes

Today we took a quiz on coordinate planes and functions. We first returned papers that were graded, reviewed the ones that were incorrect and discussed any problems. We then took the quiz. Grades for classwork and homework are updated on Pinnacle. Any missing grades can still be turned in for credit.

NO HOMEWORK – we did not have time for a new lesson. Beginning new unit tomorrow.
