A Message from Mr. Limpert’s Desk. Well, the start to the week yesterday brings us to our currents and types of waves mobiles.  Using a coat hanger and notecards of various sizes, students began to construct a moving model of surface currents, deep currents, parts of a wave and the 5 types of waves.  For each notecard, students will have the title of the topic or term and on the back will have a brief definition of it followed by a colored and creative illustration of it on one side as well. **They will also need a title card for their project with their name or names of their team members.  A copy of the rubric will need to be submitted on Wednesday when we present as well.   The students and/or groups can also add additional designs and info the structure of their mobile hanger.***Please make sure you follow the rubric and instructions given out on Monday in class.    Hopefully, we will see a lot a cool learning waving and flying in the air after Monday. Follow the rubric to make sure yours in on target!   Also on Monday, we reviewed our 10 dance steps over currents and waves.  We are doing very good on these and on understanding the meaning behind each of the dance steps.  More will  be added at the end of the week when we start tides.  We got a lot accomplished on Monday during our in-class work day for our mobile projects.  Also, wall of fame and 100% club popcorn winners were announced! Way to go if you were a part of this! Many, many of you were, which is a super thing!   Today, we have our Renaissance field trip to Stars and Strikes for 6th grade.  I hope to see you there and congratulations on continued academic excellence and super behavior.  I am looking forward to a great time.  It should be loads of fun!  We will be completing a record player demonstration of the Coriolis Effect on water and currents on Wednesday of this week.  Be ready to review the three factors that control surface currents and how surface currents are different from deep currents.     A lot of cool activities are continuing on Wednesday as students will be communicating a great deal with their partner on surface currents, deep currents, and on the Coriolis Effect.  I am looking forward to hearing what you have to say about these and how you can visually show these topics and concepts to the class.  We will also be able to walk around and evaluate each other’s currents and waves mobile projects and listen to a brief presentation of their mobile parts.   I hope to see many of these flying high around the class with flying high grades on them as well.  Can’t wait to see what happens on Wednesday!  Thursday and Friday of this week and next Tuesday we finish with tides and comparing a spring vs. a neap tide. Thursday and Friday we will get introduced to what a tide is and look at a tidal range data table to see high tides, low tides, and how many occur each day.  This tidal information will be found by having us utilize a gigantic tide data table and being able to accurately interpret and locate info from the table.  This is an important skill of interpreting graphs and data tables for success on the CRCT Test.  Also on Thursday, we will look at  a variety of different visuals to help us understand and compare spring and neap tides and tidal bulges and why and where they occur.  Get your drawing skills out and ready for a cool illustration activity dealing with these types of tides.  Friday, brings us to review our illustrations on tides from Thursday and evaluate our understanding and work with this by a dry-erase board NCAA competition bracket.  Be ready to show your illustrative and descriptive side with spring and neap tide info and pictures.  Our Friday Science Songs this week will focus on currents, waves, and tides.  This Friday is one of Mr. Limpert’s favorite songs and it has a catchy, very contaigous chorus and hook to sing a long to.  Be ready! There is no school on Monday, February 15th so on Tuesday, the 16th we will have a review day of tides and of our entire Hydrology unit before the big unit test over all of hydrology on Wednesday, February 17th.  This Hydrology unit test will cover the water cycle, water distribution, water underground, the ocean floor, currents, waves, and tides.  A study guide will be given out in advance for this test preparation.  Tuesday, February 16th we will looking at  a number of cool visuals and labs including actually getting to construct and build each type of tide using a variety of different materials.  We will be using styrofoam balls, pipe cleaners, straws, laffy taffy candy, and construction paper to build our models of spring, neap tides and of tidal bulges.  This will be your chance to formulate your tide types and show your mastery of both types of tides in look and in description.  After this construction, building, and explanation we will go over the Hydrology Unit Test study guide so everyone is set for success on Wednesday, February 17th for test day.  Be ready and be excited to learn!   Let’s have another great week of learning science on Team 6-B.  What an awesome team of scientists we have on 6-B!  The next  week’s  plan looks a little like this…..
Tuesday, 2/9-Stars and Strikes Renaissance Field Trip/Review currents and waves
Wednesday, 2/10-Surface and Deep Currents/Coriolis Effect chart activity/Demos/Record Player/Present Mobiles/Early Morning Work Session
Thursday, 2/11-Tides Intro-Spring vs. Neap
Friday, 2/12-Spring vs. Neap tide  lab activity day/Friday Science Song Quiz/Study Guide handed out
Monday, 2/15-No School!
Tuesday, 2/16-Spring vs. Neap Tide Lab Day! Review/Prepare for Hydrology Unit Test
Wednesday, 2/17-Unit Test all of Hydrology…Atmosphere Begins! Early Morning Study Session..Star Science Students!
