Scientific Method/Process Skills/Metric Measurements/Lab Safety extra info
July 28, 2009 — Mr. LimpertScientific Method:
Question: What is being asked to solve?
Hypothesis: An educated guess…written as an If…Then statement…If there is a 90% chance of rain…then I should bring my umbrella.
Procedures/Materials: Steps to follow during an experiment and items needed to successfully complete the experiment.
Perform Tests/Experiments: What you will complete and work on to get your data.
Analyze Data: Check over and carefully look over what your results were for the experiment
Draw Conclusions: Describe what you learned by completing the experiment. Was your hypothesis correct or not? Why/Why not?
Science Process Skills:
Observation(Qualitative vs. Quantitative)-Qualitative=use your 5 senses(taste, touch, sight, smell, hear) Quantitative=use a measuring instrument or device to gather an actual number or measurement for something.
Prediction: What do you think will happen in the future?
Communication: Discuss/Talk about what you see and what is going on in the experiment.
Classification: Organize your info
Inference: An explanation or interpretation of an observation. There are only red m&m’s in the package…therefore red must be the favorite color of this candy company.
Metric Measurements: Ruler=length(cm,mm), Metric Tape=length(cm,m) Triple beam balance(mass=g) Spring Scale=weight(N), Graduated cylinder=volume(ml, liters)

Metric Conversions:
King(kilo=km, kl, kg)
Henry(hecto=hm, hl, hg)
Died(deka=dhkm, dkl, dkg)
By(base=meter, liter, gram)
Drinking(deci=dm, dl, dg
Chocolate(centi-cm, cl, cg)
Milk(milli=mm, ml,mg)
measuring length=km, m, cm, mm
measuring volume=liters, ml
measuring mass=grams, mg
***Swimming Pool Method: Intertube or no Intertube? Place a decimal point always after the number if no decimal point is given. Example 245 would be 245. Draw an arrow to show which way you are moving on the chart. An arrow to the right means your answer will get larger…Example 40cm=400mm An arrow to the left means that your answer will get smaller. Example 200cm=20dm
If there is nothing in the swimming pool, you must add an intertube(0) If there is something already in the swimming pool or an intertube is already in the pool, just leave it alone, you do not need to add anything.
