Introduction to the Pythagorean Theorem. Students should be able to identify a right angle triangle, the (longest) side known as the hypotenuse, and the formula to find the length of the unknown side in the right angle triangle. See page 196 of the textbook.

Homework: Page 198 # 1-15

Thursday, Spetember 25

Each student needs to bring his/her textbook to class. A binder (with dividers) is also needed to organize materials. Progress reports were sent home last week – please return them with parent signatures.

Homework: Worktext pages 125, 129, 130, 131

Problem of the Day

A square field has an area of 2000 square feet. To the nearest foot, how much fencing would be needed to enclose the field?

9/23 Problem of the Day Answer: 91.

Bottom layer 6 square = 36 blocks; next layer 5 square = 25 blocks; next layer 4 square = 16 blocks,

next layer 3 square = 9 blocks; next layer 2 square = 4 blocks, next layer is 1. So the total is 36 + 25 + 16 + 9 + 4 + 1 = 91

Wednesday, September 24

We review 4-7 (real numbers) and did corrections. We will continue tomorrow. Next section is on Pythagorean theorem, which will take us into next week.

Only one student correctly answered "The Problem of the Day".

Homework: Continue on to page 194. Study squares and roots.

Tuesday, September 23

Start page 193.  See handout with notes.

Homework: Finish page 193. Check out Problem of the Day. You may email answer.

Problem of the Day

Read the following, and answer the question for extra credit. You must be able to show work or explain how you get your answer.

A pyramid of blocks is built in layers. The bottom layer has 62 (or 36) blocks. The next layer has 52 blocks, and so on until the top layer has 1 block.

Question: How many blocks are there in all?

Students need to bring their textbooks to class daily. Those who did not need to complete the class assignment in block 1 (page 184-5). Parents, please ask your children for progress reports. These were distributed on Wednesday.

Homework – Packet given on Tuesday is due next Monday. Study roots and squares of numbers 1-20.

Thursday, September 18

Block 1 (periods 1/2) wrote notes and did examples on square roots. (Look ahead at page 184….)

Block 3 (periods 5/6) did the guided practice on page 184.

Homework: Worktext packet given on Tuesday is due on Monday. Please use the tutorial online for unit 4-5 to help with roots and square root.
