More time zone material

Today you were in groups to help each other understand the concept of time zone calculation. I keep using the number line reference, which helps most of you out. If you think of the Prime Meridian as the 0 on the number line, then if you to the west you subtract the amount of time zones you go through from the current time, for instance, if it’s 10:00 am in Atlanta, and you call someone in Colorado, what time is it there? You go through 2 time zones, so subtract 2 hours from 10:00 am, and come up with 8:00 am in Colorade when you call. The opposite is true if you go east, you add. You also create 5 questions and answers, then wrote a paragraph to explain how you calculate time zones.

  1. Answer the 11 questions using the U.S.map on the back, and your world time zone map.
  2. Create 5 time zone questions with answers, can use either the world and/or U. S.material.
  3. Explain how to calculate time zones in a short paragraph.

You also turned in your Webquest assignment which was assigned Wednesday of last week.

TOMORROW, WE WILL BE IN THE MACLAB, Guidance is doing a Career Lesson.

HOMEWORK- finish time zone activity.

TOMORROW IS ALSO POWDER-PUFF FOOTBALL FROM 4:15-6:00PM

Are you in the Zone??

Step into the TimeZone!! Today we worked on the topic of world time zones. This proved to be a challenge for most students. I was trying to use a number line analogy for understanding the timezone concept which helped, but we’ll try again tomorrow to make sure everyone understands. You were to read p. 27 in the book, also A17, and we discussed the material, then I gave you some practice handouts to work on, even in partners this was a challenge. The links below might give you some practice.

Map day….

Today, you took the DG 9 quiz and then turned the focus to our map of Europe. We are trying to learn the countries of Europe, that way when we reference a certain country you will know where it is and how that affects it’s current situation, whether it’s economics, history, culture, or geography.

I gave each student a map of Western Europe to work on today. We had timed activities to increase our productivity and focus. Then I had students draw a capital or a country from the bucket to be and when I said go, they had to find the other half of the equation, example- a student draws "Paris", he or she has to find the student who drew "France", and so on. The first partnership to silently unite, got the prize. Then you colored and labeled your western Europe map. Please check out the link below.

Download western_europe_answers_1.doc

Download blog_map_western_europe.doc

FRIDAY IS THE MAP TEST OVER WESTERN EUROPE, PLEASE REVIEW EACH NIGHT.

The large map with latitude and longitude, European countries and capitals must be labeled and colored, this is due Thursday.

Tomorrow we will be in the maclab working on a webquest (Industrial Revolution).

HOMEWORK- review your western Europe map.
