Today students copied warmup questions DG 23 1-4, then took notes on section 1 of Chapter 5. The focus is Canadian immigration. We also talked about ethnic groups and the French and Indian War, if interested here is a link on it- http://www.frenchandindianwar250.org/
The key question: How did Canada become a multicultural country?
I asked you to read the section and be able to answer questions in the section assessment at the end of the section. I also asked students to practice identifying the Canadian provinces and capitals, using sheppardsoftware. You may see a pop quiz on Monday…
Here’s a cool map of Canada: http://encarta.msn.com/map_701511416/Canada.html

Today students presented, and we are within one or two of finishing, and talked about "Languages of Canada". We are getting into section 1 of Chapter 5, which focuses on immigration. Students worked on a handout that had a couple of tables of information and a few questions to answer, then a bar graph to create. The handout is below in case needed. This is kind of our introduction to history of Canada.

I also wanted students to complete p. 11 in the WORKBOOK, this is a chart that looks like the link below. Our chapter 5 begins in our textbook on p. 119.

Today students took the Chapter 3 Test. We reviewed ("Risky Business" or "Stump the Student") in class beforehand and were ready to go! Students were allowed to use their mnemonic device on the essay part of the test. After the test, homework was passed forward and collected.

Tomorrow, we will finish the remaining presentations and jump into Chapter 5 of our textbook.

Paint a picture for your mind! Today students continued with presentations and we almost finished. We had some excellent presentations and discussions afterward. I received permission to load the powerpoint below, which might serve as an example of a very good product. This was only half of the presentation however, the other half was the explaining and the quiz afterwords. A job well done to those boys in first period.
Download north_america_by_mackenzie.ppt
I also assigned students to create a mnemonic device for the geographical regions of North America on page 72 in the textbook. I went over the PEMDAS example in class and explained the assignment. I put some links below that might help students. The assignment is worth 70 points, 10 points for each described region in the mnemonic device. It is a homework grade, due tomorrow.
Tomorrow, we finish the presentations and review, then TAKE THE TEST. WE DIDN’T TAKE IT TODAY, BECAUSE MOST STUDENTS WERE FOCUSED ON PRESENTATIONS.

Today before students started their presentations I spoke about the why for this, and the serious nature of it, and the expectation level I had for this assignment. I had each student create a feedback form and a quick scoring scale for each presentation. After each presentation, students had to score it and then provide some type of construction feedback. We had some discussion after each presentation also. We will continue after the test on Monday. Content covered; physical North America with a focus on Canada.
Practice using the links provided: http://www.sheppardsoftware.com/Canadian_Geography.htm
Use the powerpoint below which a student created to check your answers from p. 82, which I went over in class today, except first period.
Download canada2.ppt
Monday, we will review before the test, take the test, then continue with presentations.
HOMEWORK- review your p. 82 information (which I went over in each class, except 1st), practice the geographic regions in the above link.

Today students worked on finalizing their review material in their selected format. The rubric is attached to yesterday’s blog in case students are curious, I went over it in fourth period, and I was out this morning, so I missed 1st and 2nd periods. I instructed everybody in third and fourth to be ready to present first thing tomorrow, no exceptions.
Tomorrow, we will go over some information, then begin the presentations. Students are encouraged to take notes on each one, and this could be also used as a study reference.
HOMEWORK- wrap up all loose ends at home in preparation for tomorrow
The Chapter 3 Test is moved to Monday!!!

Today students were assigned an active approach to review. They are to take the information on page 82 of the textbook and transfer into the format of their choice. The choices were a powerpoint presentation, an imovie, 2 to 3 songs, a skit/commercial, a newscast, a lecture, or a 3D model.
The rubric will be below. Here is the timeline, should have completed all the work on that page first, then decide as a group what format works best for you, tomorrow, you will work on your final product for Friday’s presentation. When you walk in on Friday, you must be ready. CLASSWORK GRADE

Today students practiced by using information to create 5 pie graphs as a warm-up. I showed each class an easier way to do this, by dividing the pie in 1/4’s or quarters, then it’s easier to work with. After the warmup, students completed the 10 questions from yesterday’s assignment and collaborated in groups of three to discuss the information. Make sure these 10 questions are completed, due on Wednesday at 10 pts. per question, classwork grade.
Be working on the physical map and color it over the weekend, this is also due on Wednesday.

Wednesday, students will turn in the above assignments and learn about Section 2 of Chapter 3, Resources.
Thursday, students will review Chapter 3
Friday, test on Chapter 3
I posted a list of study resources on my board that could be used for review:
- 10 Questions
- 3 column notes
- p. 68 chart
- notes on section 2
HOMEWORK- finish the 10 questions, read the chapter, finish the map
