Five Theme Introduction

Today students completed warm up questions, DG 3, and will have a quiz on Tuesday over this material, then we introduced the five themes of geography, after going over the five fields of learning chart (in the DG 3 powerpoint). In a group format, students were to read and discussed the theme in their group envelope, then tell the class its definition and examples of it. Then we looked at some notes, a brief license plate analogy activity, and then it was time to go.

Tuesday- we’ll finish the five themes, then review on Wednesday, and take the TEST on Thursday. Students will probably have homework Tuesday evening.

Colorful earth

Today students started the warm up, DG 3 1-4, then we took some notes on Map Skill information, and started working on the Five Fields of Learning in Geography (will finish that tomorrow). Students created a chart with the five fields, History, Geography, Government, Economics, and Culture, then we are going to fill in that chart tomorrow. Students were given the Latitude/Longitude handout for HOMEWORK, it is for a homework grade (10pts.) due tomorrow.

VERY IMPORTANT: THE TEST HAS BEEN MOVED TO THURSDAY OF NEXT WEEK

We’ll also go over the Scavenger Hunt and start the Five Themes of Geography. Below is a GEOGRAPHY TEST REVIEW GUIDE, which may help some students. Feel free to look over and make notes as we cover all the areas.

Download 0809_geography_test_review_guide.doc

We also looked at the website link from yesterday’s blog, which showed us projections, latitude/longitude, hemispheres, equator, prime meridian, etc.

I had to create our own visual example of distortion, to illustrate the concept. That’s what is below. We had discussion about this in most classes.

Wire globeToday students took the DG 2 quiz, keep on studying the DG grades were very good, then we had a textbook scavenger hunt contest, some classes did not quite finish, and then we also started some Map Skills notes, which we will finish up tomorrow.

Below is a website that allows you to play a game to understand how latitude and longitude work. Let me know what you think of it…may have to copy and paste the link into the address bar.

Another site that is kind of fun in through National Geographic, check it as well, it’s a little more mature the above site.

StudentToday students went to their very first advisement class (and we will every Tuesday), so we had an adjusted schedule and they day seemed to fly by. Students copied the rest of DG 2, went over the answers, and we even had a mini globe discussion. Then we had Mrs. Blank with us in class to talk about Guidance and who she is and how she can help.

Island Turn In Day, Quiz Announced!

Tropical Island Escape Screenshot 1

Students started with DG 2 warm up questions, then presented the islands flat upon the desktops, we had 5 minutes to walk about and determine which islands were going to be nominated for "class island", then we held a secret voting session to determine the winner, per class. After that we reviewed the landform terms from our atlas, below is a list that might be helpful. Students could also look over the landform guide they completed in class, that has the landforms pictures. STUDENTS DO NOT HAVE TO COPY ALL THE DEFINITIONS, JUST BE ABLE TO TELL THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THEM AND BE ABLE TO IDENTIFY THEM VISUALLY. EXAMPLE- IF THERE IS A PICTURE OF A GULF, STUDENTS SHOULD KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A GULF AND A BAY, THE BAY IS SMALLER.

The islands were excellent from what I saw, there were just a few students who didn’t turn the project, so, overall I was very impressed!

Landform Quiz on Wednesday!

Tomorrow, we will finish DG 2 (have that quiz on Wednesday), then listen to Mrs. Blank about guidance issues, and then go over the terms.

First DG quiz and island work: SURVEY CLOSED ON MONDAY

Today students took their first DG quiz, and most of the grades were excellent. Thank you for reviewing your material. Then we got busy with island masterpieces. Textbooks were issued in 1st period and 4th period. I am in the process of getting more textbooks for 2nd and 3rd period. We will also be using a class set of textbooks in class, so student textbooks are to remain at home. Students also signed for their book and I encouraged them greatly to check for damages and to let me know as soon as possible, so they wouldn’t be responsible for damage fees later.

PLEASE TAKE THE SURVEY (FROM FRIDAY) IF YOU HAVEN’T ALREADY, THANK YOU!!!

Monday- Islands are due, we will do a "walkabout" and then vote on islands in each period, we will also go over definitions of landforms and discuss why we’re learning about landforms.

HOMEWORK- FINISH ISLAND

HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND, WEEK #2 OF MIDDLE SCHOOL, GREAT JOB!!!
