Today students completed a group activity involving/discussing/learning about Section 2 (History/Government of Mexico)and started Section 3. It went like so:
- Read, Discuss, and Write notes of assigned topic from Section 2.
-
Each group had 20-25 mintues to prepare notes on their topic.
-
Then the computer randomly selected a presenter for each group to share with the class their group notes.

I told the class I was assessing each group based on their presentation, with the following as a rubric, 5= a most thorough and accurate presentation, all important information covered; 4= most of the important information was covered; 3= very little information was covered. Most groups had incredible presentations.
Also, I encouraged students to follow along in the book as other students were speaking to reinforce the information being presented.

I also said that each student should be looking around the house for some type of box, for the culture box assignment coming up. Some types of boxes might be a shoe box, a cereal box, a waffle box, etc.

Today students completed the warm up, how to read a physical map, and then created their own version of a physical map of Mexico, using students bodies as features for time. It was very interesting. Here are the questions that cover section 1 of chapter 7, we will complete this on Monday. I said not to do them for homework, but if you want to, go ahead.

Today students handed in the journal entry with the Mexico writing prompts completed (from yesterday's blog), hopefully. This entry was out of 5 points, with 5 being most complete and 1 being barely anything on paper. Then, students watched a video clip about the Maya and identified five factoids that they didn't know and five factoids that they did know. It was also "Science Day" and we went to the theater during 2nd period.
In 1st and 3rd, we took a look at "Fun Facts About Mexico" and had a discussion about them.
In a couple of classes we compared two Maya video clips, and wrote "Which one did you learn from more and why?"

Today students went to the Media Center to learn how to create a timeline on a program called Timeliner. The focus today was to get comfortable and learn the basics of this program that way when you have to do this for a graded assignment, you will create a masterpiece. Thank you to Mrs. Harpin for teaching the classes today.

Progress reports went home today, (EXCEPT 1ST PERIOD- I'll give those out tomorrow) if students with a D or an F could have a signature on the report when it comes back to me by Friday, that would be helpful.
Tomorrow is going to be a busy day. I will hand back some papers to go over, we need to finish the Black Bart assignment on map skills, and you will put together your timelines.

Students took the DG 17 quiz today, then took the physical feature quiz of Latin America, and then went ahead to Black Bart's Bounty. We are really stressing some map skills and interpretation skills, so we will be practicing frequently.
Here is some help if you are interested in how to read a contour line map (topographical map).
