Vocabulary Quiz on Friday

dred-scottWe completed the causes of the Civil War today.  Remember to review the vocabulary words we covered in class:

secession:  separation from an alliance; a state separating from the union.

abolitionist:  a dedicated opponent to slavery

fugitive: a person fleeing justice

compromise:  the settlement of differences; an agreement

states’ rights:  the belief that states should have more power than the federal government

platform:  the beliefs of a group – usually a political group

tariff: a tax on imported goods

nullification:  a state declaring a federal law unconstitutional

Homework:  Study for your quiz! For an easy bonus, whose picture is at the top of this blog post?  Just write the answer at the bottom of your quiz tomorrow.  Shhh…don’t tell anybody.

Causes of the Civil War

slaveryToday we continued investigating the causes of the Civil War.  We will finish our notes on Wednesday.  Use your notes and Chapter 7 Section 2 in your textbook to complete your homework.

Homework:  In a well-written paragraph, thoroughly explain how slavery and states’ rights were two of the causes of the Civil War.  Don’t forget to include a graphic or picture!

Kennesaw mayor and councilToday we took a short quiz over the juvenile justice system and then worked in groups to complete an activity on local governments.  Next week:   Antebellum Georgia!  What in the world does “antebellum” mean?  You better know by Tuesday!

  • Executive and judicial branch questions
  • Executive and judicial branch quizzes
  • Georgia’s government chart (exec. and judicial sections)
  • Judicial vocabulary

All of you will do well on this test if you put in the study time.  Don’t wait until Monday night!

Court Cases

courtroomToday we took a quiz over our judicial branch vocabulary, and we analyzed the court cases we researched.  We will complete juvenile justice on Friday and have a test over the executive and judicial branches on Tuesday, February 9th.

Homework:  If you did not finish analyzing your court case, complete it for homework (See guidelines below).  Review the executive and judicial branches of your government graphic organizer.

—Type of case – criminal or civil (if criminal, is it a felony or misdemeanor).
—Type of court the case will be held in or is in right now (trial or appellate).
—Name the prosecutor and defendant (for criminal cases) or the plaintiff and defendant (for civil cases)
—What do you think the outcome of the case will be.  Why?  If there has already been a ruling, was the ruling fair?  Give reasons for your opinion.
—Type of case – criminal or civil (if criminal, felony or misdemeanor)
—Type of court the case is in right now (trial or appellate)
—Name the prosecutor and defendant or the plaintiff and defendant
