Cardiologists Presentation…

heartToday we heard several awesome presentations on the circulatory system from our “cardiologists”.

You guys turned in your STARS from the section in your text on the circulatory system.

I gave you guys a copy of your Case Study for the “patient” you will be educating regarding their ficticious disease.  You also received a recording sheet for your research and a coy of the scoring rubric for the assignment.  Go ahead and begin researching for the next week.

Homework:  Begin your Case Study Research=)

Digestive and Urinary System’s Exam…

Below is the message my substitute, Mrs. Chambless, gave to you in class today:

Dear Physicians in Training (AC Science Students):

Please excuse me for not being here today.  My mother is having surgery to have her gallbladder removed; I can’t remember if I told you guys or not.  Here is a list of all you need to accomplish today.

Surf’s Up:  After eating a hamburger, what transport mechanism is used to get the protein molecules from the digestive system into the blood?

Raise your hand when you are ready to go over the answer with Mrs. Chambliss.

 Assignments:

  •  Complete and turn in the Digestive and Urinary System Test.  Be sure to read the questions carefully and follow all directions.
  • Make sure you have completed and turned in the Enzyme Lab (due today).
  • The Sheep Kidney Observation Lab is also due today.  Did you turn it in?
  • The U.R. in Trouble clinical problem solving activity is due tomorrow.  Use the research envelopes at your desk, if needed.
  • Read and complete the Circulatory System STARS from pages 606-611.   These are due tomorrow.

Tomorrow the cardiologists will be presenting the circulatory system!

Since it is a test day today, then there should be no conversation during class.  Strikes count double if a negative report is left by a substitute.

 See you tomorrow!

Mrs. Newman

Nephrons in Action

kidney-nephronToday we reviewed the parts of the kidney and watched a simulation of the nephron and its ability to filter the blood.  What happened to the urea, glucose, water, sodium, and protein?  Click here if you would like to watch the simulation again:  http://www.biologymad.com/resources/kidney.swf.

Next, you continued working on your labs for these two systems:  Enzyme Lab, Sheep Kidney Observation Lab, and U.R. in Trouble clinical prob.em solving activity.  The enzyme lab and sheep kidney lab needs to be turned in by tomorrow.  U.R. in Trouble is due by Friday.

Homework:  STUDY for tomorrow’s test on the digestive system and the urinary system.

U. R. in Trouble!

kidneysToday you were to finish the Sheep Kidney Observation Lab and you began your clinical technician problem solving activity on the urniary system.  Let’s see how well you were be able to match the patient’s sample with the misplaced label.  What diagnosis would you give the patients?  What lab tests would you order?  Click here if you need a copy of this assignment:   U. R. in Trouble Clinical Technician.  We will continue working on this activity tomorrow.

CAN YOU LABEL THE DIAGRAM TO THE RIGHT?

You had to show me your STARS on the urinary system for a grade.  Tomorrow is the last day they will be accepted with penalty.

Cardiologists:  Make sure you have turned in your visual organizer and  exit tickets for your presentation on Friday.

Homework:  STUDY!  STUDY!  STUDY!  Test on digestive system and urinary system is scheduled for this Thursday.

Urinary System….

Urinary SystemToday we began exploring the urinary system.  The urologists presented the major components and their functions.  They also shared with us common medical disorders and how the urinary system functions with other systems of the body.  How does the urinary system serve the needs of cells?

You guys also had the opportunity to observe a sheep kidney’s internal and external anatomy while working on an observation lab.  We will complete this tomorrow.

Homework:  Complete the STARS notes on the Urinary System on pp. 642-645.  These are due tomorrow.

Upcoming Test:  Thursday, January 28 on Digestive System and Urinary System.

Upcoming Presentation:  Friday, January 29th the cardiologists will present the circulatory system.

Who won the battle between the liver and the potato?

Who won the battle between the liver and the potato?

Today we reviewed the types of digestion (mechanical/chemical) that occur in the mouth.  Next we began investigating the problem, “Do liver cells or potato cells contain more of the enzyme catalase?”  Catalase is an enzyme found in most living cells.  This enzyme changes a poison that accumulates in cells into harmless substances.  The poison is hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), and the resulting harmless substances are oxygen gas (O2) and water (H2O) .

Questions to think about:

  • Which substance produced the fastest chemical reaction?
  • Would that be the tissue with the most catalase?
  • Was the reaction time longer due to less catalase?
  • What do the results tell you about the function of the liver?
  • How does this experiment demonstrate that tissues serve the need cells have for waste removal?

On Monday we will discuss these points.  Your graph and conclusion paragraph are due on Tuesday.

Our Urologists will be presenting the Urinary System on Monday.  I hope the groups turned in their Visual Organizers and Exit Tickets for copying.  I haven’t really been “hooked” yet=(  Let’s see if the urologists will show improvment in that area.

Homework:  *****I forgot to give out this assignment in class today.******  Want to earn 10 bonus points on the assignment for checking the blog?  If yes, then complete the STARS notes on the Urinary System on pages 642-645.

Upcoming Test:  Thursday, January 28 Anatomy II:  Digestive System and Urinary System.   BEGIN STUDYING!  Below are some on-line activities to help you review.  Don’t forget to study the sections in your textbook, too.

Digestion Begins…

300px-Digestive_system_diagram_en_svgToday you received your Anatomy I Test back on the integumentary, skeletal, and muscular systems.  Be sure to look carefully at what you missed;  this information will show up again on the Anatomy Final at the end of our unit.

Congratulations to those of you who now qualify for the 100% Club based on your acing of the test!  WOW!

Our next test will cover the digestive and urinary systems.  Today you had to turn in your STAR notes from pages 634-641 on the digestive system.  We had our gastroenterologist present their system today.  We will review this information tomorrow and if your notes were turned in, then you will move on to an enzyme lab.

Homework:  Begin reviewing the digestive system.  Complete your STARS notes on pages 634-641 tonight if you did not turn them in today.

Residency Exam I TODAY!

human-body-major-systems-organsToday you took your Anatomy Part I exam on the integumentary, skeletal, and muscular systems.  I hope to have these scored and on Pinnacle by 8:30 in the morning=)

Once you turned in your test you needed to work on the Chicken Wing Lab response sheet.  These need to be completed by tomorrow and turned in to the tray.

Tomorrow we will be moving on to the digestive system.  I can’t wait for our gastroenterolgist to present (Allie, Adam H., Alex C., Victor, Alex S., Alec C., Mitchell, Jonathan K., Tatum, Vince, Scott, and Zack S.).

Homework:  Read pages 634-641 and complete STARS notes.  These are due tomorrow.  Gastroenterologist are exempt from this assignment;  you need to prepare for tomorrow’s presentation.

Winging It!

chicken wingToday you guys identified the parts of the integumentary system, muscular system, and skeletal system as you explored a chicken wing.  You had to show me the biceps, triceps, tendons, ligaments, and cartilage.  You also observed a ball and socket joint, hinge joint, and gliding joint.  Could you tell the difference between the dermis and epidermis?  Next time you have Hot Wings for dinner, see if you can teach your family about the integumentary, muscular, and skeletal systems!

You may complete your lab response sheet tomorrow after the test.

Homework:  Be sure to review your STARS and the skeletal and muscular system labeling sheets in preparation for the test tomorrow.  Below are some on-line acitivities you may want to check out to help you study:
