Study Guide for 6th Grade Unit 1 Test

Today we discussed communication skills (a mini-topic under the Mental/Emotional, and Social Health Unit).  Today we learned about the 2 styles of communication (Verbal and Non-verbal).  Next, the class practiced acting out emotions.  We discovered that we communicate more through non-verbal than verbal actions.  We will continue this tomorrow and learn 7 great communication tips that you can use throughout your life.

7th Grade:  What do you do if a person does NOT give consent?

7 Steps Quiz tomorrow

Today we finished practicing the 7 steps to checking an unconscious person.  Study these 7 steps tonight.

1.  Check the Scene for safety

2.  Tap and Shout-”Are you okay?”-No response Call 911

3.  Roll the persobn over supporting the neck and hip

4.  Tilt head back

5.  Look, Listen, and Feel for breathing for 10 sec.

6.  If not breathing, give 2 breaths

7.  Check for severe bleeding

Tomorrow we will begin the skill of CPR. 

8th Grade:  How would you describe your own health? 

Today the students discovered their own health status.  Next, the students participated in an Auction!  The students bid on things they wanted to do in their future.  We also disocvered that if you don’t have goals then you may end up with something you didn’t even expect to happen!  Next, the students will get to design their own goal.  Reminder:  Health quiz on Monday!  See study guide below!  Know your health concept map and an example of each word that impacts your life!

This Thursday and Friday are the final days to buy your Got Hope? T-Shirts!

6th Grade:  How would you describe a healthy person?

Today we discussed the three dimensions of health and what it means to be a healthy person.  If you were absent, please copy these notes from a classmate’s folder.  These notes will be covered on your first quiz (Health Triangle Notes).

7th Grade:  How can CPR help a person?

Today we began the CPR unit.   The students received their CPR worksheet.  This will be due at the end of the unit.  Whenever you are not practicing your skills then you need to be working on your CPR worksheet.  Today the class also learned the three steps to take in an emergency-Check, Call, and Care.  The students began practicing the 7 Steps to checking an unconscious person.  We will finish this tomorrow! 

8th Grade:  How is the alphabet related to health education?

Today we completed the ABC Brainstorm.  Great ideas/answers class!  We learned that many things in life relate to your health.  Next, the students completed the Health Concept Map.  We will finish discussing the 5 words that impact your life tomorrow.

6th Grade: 

Today the students completed the Human Growth and Dev. Test.  After the test the students went to the www.preventcancer.org/bodyfun website.  This website incorporates good decision making skills about nutrition, exercise, etc. as the students work through different levels.  I hope you enjoyed traveling down the Road of Life.  Tomorrow is the last day of the nine weeks.  I have really enjoyed getting to know each of you!  I wish you all the best!

7th Grade:  Today the students completed the Human Growth and Dev. Test.  We also discussed the importance of decisions and how they impact your future!  Tomorrow we will complete the nine weeks.  Reminder:  Bring your favorite game to play:)  I have really enjoyed getting to know each one of you!

8th Grade:  The students are working on a collage that decribes their best qualities, decisions they can make, lessons learned in health class, and how they can make a difference in the world.  We will present these tomorrow!  I have enjoyed teaching you and thank you for your effort and participation in class:)  I wish you all the best!

6th Grade: 

Reviewed the Food Pyramid Exit Ticket Results!  Next, we completed the M & M walking Lab.  It takes a 1 minute walk to burn off the calories from 1 M & M…WOW!  The students reviewed their peer evaluation sheets and analyzed what they did well and any challenges during their presentations.  No homework at this time!

7th Grade:  Socialization Day before new unit on Monday!

8th Grade:  Healthy Snack Day!

What a great day!  THANK YOU for the snacks you brought in!  They were very tasty!

All classes will begin Human Growth and Development on Monday!

6th Grade:  How can regular eating become disordered eating?

Today we almost finished all presentations.  The students in 6-1 class were able to look at their peer evaluations.  The 6-2 class will do this tomorrow.  Well Done !!!

7th Grade:  PC Lab

Today the students finished their Inspiration projects.  Next, the students presented their projects in the PC lab.  So Creative!!!  Great effort!  Tomorrow your current events are due!  Follow the directions that I gave you!

8th Grade:  If 2,000 steps = 1 mile…did you walk to Six Flags (30 miles)?

Today the walking logs were due!  Also, your current events were due as well.  Today we shared  the current events and healthy snack designs!  We will finish sharing tomorrow!  Reminder:  Healthy Snack Day is this Friday!!!!!

6th Grade:  What has 1, 420 calories and 107 grams of fat?

Today we discussed the facts behind the “Monster Thickburger” at Hardees.  It has twice as much saturated fat that is allowed in a day.  After this discussion the students began working on their nutrition presentations.  We will finish practicing tomorrow!  I can’t wait to hear your presentations!

7th Grade:  What has 1, 420 calories and 107 grams of fat?

Reminder:  Meet in the PC lab tomorrow to begin your Inspiration Design!

Today we discussed the facts behind Hardees “Monster Thickburger”.  This burger has twice as much saturated fat that is allowed for one day.  I also gave the students a rubric for their Inspiration Design.  The students will create this design tomorrow in the PC Lab.  Next, the students were given a current event assignment which will be due on Thursday Feb. 25!  Find a health related school appropriate article and write a paragraph summary with a minimum of 10 sentences.  The paragraph needs to include the answers to the f0llowing questions:

1.  Why did you choose this article?

2.  What did you learn from the article?

3.  Do you agree or disagree with the information in the article?

4.  How does this information impact your life?

Make sure to include the article or a copy of the article with your paper!

8th Grade:  How is the process of tracking your steps going?  Walking Log Due Wednesday!                             

Today the class started working on their final draft of their healthy snack design.  This will be due at the end of class on Tuesday!  Next, the class was given a  current event assignment that will be due on Wednesday, Feb. 24!  The requirements are noted below in case you were absent:

Find a health related school appropriate article and write a paragraph summary with a minimum of 10 sentences.  The paragraph needs to include the answers to the f0llowing questions:

3.  Do you agree or disagree with the information in the article?

6th Grade:  Today we began our nutrition group activity assignment.  The students will work in groups of up to four.  They will create either a song, dance/cheer, or skit demonstrating facts learned from the food pyramid.  We will work on this for a couple of days then present next week.  All Food Pyramid Project Sheets need to be turned in!!

7th and 8th grade:  Listened to Dr. Depew and his staff today regarding oral health.  They did a fantastic job!

 

Reminder:  8th grade students be thinking about what snack you would like to bring in for Healthy Snack Day next week!  It will probably be next Wednesday!  I will let you know for sure on Monday!

All grade levels:

EQ- Evaluate the two diets listed on the overhead!

Today all classes compared, contrasted, and evaluated two different diets.  

6th Grade:  We played a review Jeopardy game that reviewed what we had learned from the Food Guide Pyramid Project sheet yesterday.

7th Grade:  The students presented their fast food findings to the class!  This was very interesting!

8th Grade:  The students began their healthy snack design on paper.  We will finish this in class on Monday due to having a guest speaker tomorrow!  Reminder:  Wear your pedometer each day and track your steps-aim for 10,000!!  Think about what ytou would like to bring for a snack next week!  Talk with your parents about what you may be able to bring to class (grapes, goldfish, apples, popcorn, pretzels, etc.).

6th Grade:  PC Lab-No EQ

Today the class met in teh PC Lab.  We researched the Food Guide Pyramid.  If you did not finish in class you may access the website from my blog “Food Pyramid“.  This is due tomorrow.

7th Grade:  How can fast food be healthy?

Today the students ordered a meal from a restaurant.  They were to stay within their dietary guidelines for One day with One meal.   I can’t wait to see what you found out when you present your findings tomorrow in class!!

8th Grade:  How can reading food labels help you choose a product?

Today the class practiced reading food labels while looking at a food product.  Next, some of the students presented their results to the class.  We discussed the importance of looking at saturated fat, cholesterol, and sodium.  Tomorrow the students will begin creating a healthy snack on paper while including a food label.  Think tonight of what you would like for your snack to be-Your Own Creation!
