8/31: Outliers

Classwork:

  • We reviewed how to find the median, upper quartile, lower quartile, extremes, and interquartile range to begin class
  • We then discussed outliers, and we calculated using two problems from last night’s homework to see if there were any outliers in problems 9 or 12. Remember, to see if there are outliers, you take the interquartile range and multiply by 1.5. After you’ve completed the multiplication, you check to see if any numbers you have in the data set are at least as far away from the other numbers as the product of your multiplication problem.
  • We at least started number 1 from your homework sheet together, and in some classes we finished :)

Homework:

  • Finish worksheet 7-5….remember, number 1 should be completed on the back (the plot and all work), and you must state whether you have NO OUTLIERS, ONE OUTLIER, or TWO OUTLIERS (show the multiplication to justify (back-up) your answer
  • Box-and-Whisker quiz on Wednesday

8/30: Interquartile Range

Classwork:

  • Today we quickly reviewed the steps used in creating a box-and-whisker plot.
  • We then looked at some box-and-whisker plots and analyzed them to see which one had the greater median, the greater range, the greater interquartile range, and which was more predictable.
  • Remember, to find the interquartile range, you take the upper quartile and subtract the lower quartile. The smaller the interquartile range (the data is closer together), then the more predictable the graph (values on the graph) are going to be.
  • We went through four examples of interquartile ranges and predictability togther as a class

Homework: Textbook page 396-7: 9 (only make one box-and-whisker plot), 12, 13a, 13b, 14a, 14b, 14c, & 15

8/29: Beginning of Box-&-Whisker Plots

Classwork:

  • We discussed the warm-up quizzes and how it is important to keep up with warm-ups and stay organized so you can find and read your work
  • Some people struggled with the "Analysis Paragraph" from the project you were to turn in today, so we took a few minutes to discuss those expectations
  • We read through the Box-&-Whisker Power Point presentation, and then we did a few examples together….I think most of you were surprised how easy the plots really are, but they look like they might be confusing
  • You tried to work one through yourself amd asled questions if you got stuck…..we’ll be working on these for quite awhile, so it’ll take a little time :0)

Homework:  Page 245 in your worktext…..you don’t have to complete the back side page 246

8/24: Samples and Populations

Sorry the blog wasn’t updated yesterday after school, but the Internet was down at school, so I couldn’t do it before I left for the day….

Classwork:

  • HW check
  • Agenda check
  • Discussed the mini-project you are going to work on Monday and Tuesday in class…..I’ll link that information to the blog tomorrow because I don’t have access to that file on this computer
  • We read section 7-8 in your textbook….this section addresses "populations" and "samples." Remember, sometimes it is impossible or nearly impossible to ask an entire population (for example all 7th graders in the U.S.), so we take a sample (a small portion of the entire population) of 7th graders and survey them. Random, non-biased sampling is the best way to complete a survey, but sometimes we have a convenience sample complete our survey because it is readily available and easier for us to complete.

Homework:

  • Complete pages 414-415: 1 – 11
  • Come up with your survey question for your mini-project (remember, the answer must be able to be answered with a number
  • Cover textbooks

8/23: Stem-and-leaf plots

Classwork:

  • You worked with your group to make sure everyone had the correct answers to last night’s homework, then you stapled all of your gruop’s papers together and turned them in for a classwork grade
  • We reviewed stem-and-leaf plots (you maybe didn’t remember them from 6th grade)….remember the numbers should be in order from least to greatest and you list each stem only one time.
  • You took your first vocabulary quiz today, and you could use your vocabulary folder if you had it with you

Homework:

  • Cover your textbook if you don’t already have it done
  • Finish stem-and-leaf worksheet
