3/31: Finishing up Cross-Sections

Classwork:

  • We reviewed the different possible cross-sections for prisms, pyramids, cones, cylinders, and cubes for your quiz tomorrow (period 7/8: the 3rd nine weeks reward party is tomorrow during your class, so you will take the quiz on Wednesday)
  • We discussed about how having a clean card from week-to-week will earn you the priviledge of eating outside on Thursdays. It is not a punishment for those students who did not earn it, but it is a reward for those who do earn the right. If the weather is too cold, rainy, or uncooperative, then we’ll all eat inside as usual. Each week (Thursday -to-Thursday) we’ll start fresh again, so even if you don’t make it this week, you can work on earning it for the next time.
  • You cut rectangles, squares, triangles, and circles out of posterboard and put your group’s shapes in your class basket for use tomorrow and Wednesday.

Homework:

  1. Study for tomorrow’s cross-sections quiz
  2. Unit 7 – Test on Friday (remember to let me know if you are going to be leaving for spring break early so you can take the test on Thursday)
  3. OAS website practice CRCT tests (extra credit) due by April 23

3/27: Crazy with Cross-Sections

Classwork:

  • You continued working on "Cross-Sections of a Cube" for the first 15 – 20 minutes. Some of you needed a little guidance with the play-doh and how to create cross-sections, but most of you knew what your were trying to accomplish. If you struggled making cross-sections from a cube, please see Monday’s blog and click on the link to the cross-sections website.
  • We then switched gears a little (some of you were starting to finish) and moved on to the second task of the day "Crazy with Cross-Sections." We set up your papers together (I did it on the board while you copied the work onto your paper), and then we completed the first one together
    (a. cylinder). Repeat what we did with the cylinder for b. cone and c. sphere.
  • After I helped you get started on "Crazy with Cross-Sections" you had the rest of the time to work on both assignments…..the assignments are due at the beginning of class tomorrow for a classwork grade.

Homework:

  1. Cross-Sections of a Cube & Crazy with Cross-Sections are due at the beginning of class tomorrow
  2. CRCT packet (two worksheets front and back from Tuesday) are due Monday for a classwork grade
  3. Unit 7 test next Friday, April 4 (if you’re leaving early for spring break, you may take the test on Thursday before you leave)
  4. If you want extra credit, go to the on-line assessment website (see the blue handout you received with your report card) and take any of the 8 practice tests. All extra credity is due by April 23…..the date the CRCT starts.

3/26: Cross-Sections of a Cube

Classwork:

  • We discussed how your Unit 7 test has been moved to next Friday, April 4….the last day before spring break. Remember, if you practice during class and ask questions you should do just fine on the test. You will need to understand the vocabulary and know all of the shapes!
  • We talked about you visiting the on-line assessment system to take some practice quizzes to help you prepare for the CRCT. If you take any practice quizzes and score 80% or higher I will give you extra points on your unit 7 test next week. When you take the on-line quizzes, remember to click where it asks if you want your scores reported to the teacher (if you don’t do this I won’t see your results….if you prefer to print out a copy of your results and bring it to me that is okay also, but I will not just take your word that you took a test and scored 80% or better. There are 8 quizzes available for you; there is a quiz addressing each unit – seven total units (most of those quizzes are 7 – 12 questions) and one cumulative test for the whole year (this is 50 questions). For each of the unit tests you can earn 1 bonus point towards the unit 7 test next week, and for the cumulative test you can earn 10 bonus points. Use the state id you received on the blue sheet along with your report last Thursday.
  • We checked Monday night’s homework
  • We started working with the Play-Doh and "Cross-Sections of a Cube"…..you have to start trying to make various different shaped cross-sections from only a cube. We will continue this activity for the first 15 – 20 minutes of class tomorrow

Homework:

  1. The CRCT review sheets from yesterday are due Monday, March 31…..if you finish them earlier, you may turn them in early. Remember they are going to count for a classwork grade because you had all class period on Tuesday to work on them.
  2. Look at Monday’s blog for a cross-sections website and play with the cube demonstration….it will help you with finishing up "Cross-Sections of a Cube"
  3. Extra credit is due by the start of the CRCT which is April 23…..take any or all of the on-line assessment quizzes (you must earn an 80% or better to get the extra points :o )
