Today you completed warm-up #9 in class, so Tuesday you will be completing warm-up #10 and as soon as we’ve gone over the correct answer you will be taking a warm-up quiz. If you’ve been writing down the correct work and answers as we’ve gone through the warm-up each day you’ll do great…..you CAN use your warm-up sheet on the quiz :~)

Classwork:
- You received your Olympic Medal Histogram back today, and we quickly reviewed the correct answers.
- We filled in the Line Graphs portion of your Unit 1 flip book
- Using the leading NFL rusher’s statistics from last year, we learned how to create stem and leaf plots…..the first thing you do is make a t-chart with the stems on the left side and the leaves on the right side. The only digits which can go in the leaves column are the digits in the one place; all of the digits in the tens, hundreds, etc. place will be in the stems column. For example: 73, the 7 would go in the stems column and the 3 would be in the leaf column; 145, 14 would go in the stem column and 5 would go in the leaf column.
- It’s important to remember once you have a stem listed, you don’t list it again.
- We filled in the stem and leaf plot section of your flip book (Yeah! The whole book is complete!)
Homework:
- Stem and Leaf Worksheet – both sides
- Remember you’re going to be getting the information about your unit project next week. In order to make a line graph you have to be able to show change over a period of time, so you are going to collect data about yourself for the line graph. Everyone is using the same question: "How many minutes do you spend reading each day of the week?" You should write down the number of minutes every day for seven straight days. Be sure to include all reading (magazines, books, in class, etc.). You can write the number of minutes on each day in your agenda if you want so you’ll have the data when it is needed.
- HAVE A GREAT 3-DAY LABOR DAY WEEKEND!

Classwork:
- We had a warm-up question yesterday about line graphs (which you’ve seen in the past), but today we quickly reviewed line graphs and why you would use a line graph. Remember a line graph is used to show the change in data over time…..some measure of time will be on the x-axis (the bottom) of your graph, and you will have points on your graph connected by line segments to show increases or decreases in the given data.
- After our brief review of how and why you use a line graph, your group continued working on the Olympic Medal Histogram task in class…..it is a class activity grade, so hopefully you and your group put forth 100% effort!
- If your group finished with time remaining, you should have started your homework
Homework:
- Thick workbook – Pages 183-185 (that sounds like a lot, but there is only one question on page 183, one on page 184, and five on page 185)
- If you need any help with line graphs, I’ve attached the Line Graphs Power Point from the textbook for you to refer to if you want extra examples or help

Classwork:
- You received your quizzes back, and we went through common mistakes and any questions you might have had
- We started talking about the Olympic Medal Histogram activity…..you were in groups of 2 or 3, and today you started by deciding what your intervals were going to be. After your group decided, you were to make a frequency table to tally the number of countries who earned within that range of medals. Most of you didn’t get this far, but then you were to use the frequency table to create a histogram of the data. Tomorrow we will finish making the histograms and answering the 5 questions which accompany the activity.
Homework: Thin workbook page 48 (remember you have a thick and a thin workbook, make sure you’re working in the correct one
)

This Friday, August 29 is "National College Colors Day!" If you have a favorite college (or your parents have a favorite college for you
), wear that school’s colors on Friday to show your college spirit! Will anyone else be supporting the Wisconsin Badgers with a "Go Big Red" shirt??????

Classwork:
- Using your homework sheet from last night (#3 – the ages of the hockey fans at last night’s game) we created a histogram in class. Remember, the two differences between a bar graph and a histogram are that (1) bar graphs have spaces between the bars, and a histogram, the bars are touching one another to show continuous data, and (2) a histogram uses intervals, or ranges of numbers, on one of the axes instead of categories like in a bar graph.
- We discussed how histograms are used to show numerical data (questions can be answered with a number), and bar and pictographs are used to show categorical data.
- You filled in the histograms section of your flip book, and you should only have line graphs and stem and leaf plots left to complete.
Homework: Reading and Interpreting Histograms Worksheet – both sides

Classwork:
- I took any questions you had about line plots, frequency tables, bar graphs, and pictographs before giving you the Graphs Quiz. I haven’t graded them yet, but many of you said it was easy, so I’m expecting high grades :~)
- After the quiz, you picked up your worksheet which had frequency tables on it…..this will lead us into our study of histograms tomorrow, and we’ll be able to fill in the histogram section of our flip books.
- While you were doing the above activities, I assigned textbooks and workbooks. Please remember to write your first and last names in the front cover of your workbooks with ink – I wrote your names in the textbook, so you should be good there! Be sure to bring your workbooks every day, and I will put a sign in the hallway when you will need your textbooks. Your textbooks should remain at school unless you’re taking it home to study or to complete an assignment, but remember you do have access to the online textbook.

QUIZ ON MONDAY…..LINE PLOTS, FREQUENCY TABLES, BAR GRAPHS, & PICTOGRAPHS
Classwork:
- Today in class we finished taking notes in your Unit 1-Data Analysis flip book, so you can use that as a study tool for Monday’s quiz. Be sure to know how to read and interpret line plots, frequency tables, bar graphs, and pictographs and the characteristics of them as well.
- We briefly discussed the line plots worksheet….remember, start your number lines with the least value and end them with the greatest value. Use equal intervals (if you start by going up by twos, then go up by twos the whole number line). For Part II of the worksheet, be sure to read the questions carefully because it asks for answers in feet, and the line plot is in inches.
Homework:
- Complete line plots worksheet
- Study for Monday’s quiz which will address line plots, frequency tables, bar graphs, and pictographs
- If anyone wants to practice or review a concept, you can download either of the following Power Point presentations…..the first on is on bar graphs and the other on line plots and frequency tables (ignore the histogram stuff for now
)
