Classwork: First and second period, I was not here, but the substitute told me many of you finished your homework during class……make sure your work is shown in order to receive full credit!

  • You received a graphic organizer for adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions and mixed numbers…..be sure to keep that bright blue sheet somewhere safe!
  • The remainder of the class you spent working on your homework assignment. Thank you to everyone who used their time wisely and finished (or nearly finished) in class. You’ll have a fun and relaxing Halloween weekend without much math homework :~)
  • Download 1CH5L3.ppt

Homework: Thick workbook – Page 136: All problems except #5, #13, & #20

Adding & Subtracting Fractions

Classwork:

  • First we reviewed how to order and compare fractions by reviewing problems from last night’s homework assignment
  • You took the Ordering and Comparing Fractions Quiz
  • After the quiz, you should have copied the steps for adding and subtracting fractions from the Smart Board. If you don’t have the notes, you can use your worksheet from today to help you remember the four steps, or you can open the attached PDF file
  • Download adding_subtracting_notes.pdf
  • I’ve also attached the power point in case you like that format better  Download 1CH5L2.ppt
  • You worked on your homework for the remainder of class. We went through various examples from your homework on the board as a class.

Homework:

  1. Adding & Subtracting Fractions worksheet – both sides….be sure to use your notes to help you. All answers must be in SIMPLEST FORM. If you have any improper fractions, you must convert them to mixed numbers to be simplest form.
  2. There is a help session tomorrow morning at 8:15 in my room. This isn’t to prepare for any quiz or test…..it is just for the students who truly need help with fractions up to this point. If you didn’t get a pass and you are struggling with fractions to this point, please print this out as your pass for 10/31’s help session.

More Practice Comparing & Ordering Fractions

Classwork:

  • We reviewed how to find the LCD (least common denominator) of fractions and went over homework questions.
  • If you earned an "A" on your Decimals test from last week, you received your certificate today and A’s, B’s, and C’s signed the hallway banner!
  • You and a partner (or two depending upon how many kids were in your class) had dice and you rolled to create fractions. One of you rolled to make the numerator and one rolled to make the denominator. After you had created three fractions, you were to (1) find the LCD (2) rewrite the fractions using the LCD (you made equivalent fractions), and (3) ordered the original fractions from least to greatest
  • The last 15 minutes of class were spent working on your homework

Homework:

  • Thick workbook page 111
  • Quiz over ordering and comparing fractions tomorrow (see yesterday’s blog for the power point if you need help)

Comparing & Ordering Fractions

Classwork:

  • Today in class we reviewed how to convert mixed numbers to improper fractions and improper fractions to mixed numbers before you took the quiz. Overall, quiz scores were FANTASTIC!
  • After the quiz, we discussed how to compare and order fractions using a LCD (Least Common Denominator). Remember, the LCD is the Least Common Multiple of the denominators.
  • Once you have found the LCD, then you use the LCD to re-write the fractions (make equivalent fractions) with the new denominator.
  • Compare the two or three fractions (or however many you have) to see which one is greatest and which is least (once you have all fractions written with the same denominator, you only have to look at the numerators to see which one is least or greatest)
  • Download 1CH4L7.ppt

Homework:

  1. Comparing & Ordering Fractions half sheet
  2. Study for comparing and ordering fractions

  • You had the opportunity to see your Decimals test and ask any questions. Remember, math tests stay on file at school, so you weren’t allowed to take them home with you. Overall, the scores were fabulous!
  • We practiced converting mixed numbers to improper fractions and converting improper fractions to mixed number
  • You received a handout with the steps used to convert from one to another. There is also an example of how to complete both processes provided for you.
  • Download 1CH4L6.ppt

Homework:

  1. Thick workbook page 104 – Odds & #20
  2. Quiz tomorrow – Converting mixed numbers to improper fractions and converting improper fractions to mixed numbers
