Halloween Candy

Remember to be safe while trick-or-treating tomorrow while you’re out have a great time. Also, if you get more candy than you can possibly enjoy OR you are just feeling generous, Ms. Parson’s homeroom is taking candy donations to bring the Atlanta Children’s Shelter since most children in shelters won’t get the opportunity to go trick-or-treating. Thanks in advance if you end up donating :o ) Have Fun!!!

Percents to Decimals and Percents to Fractions

Classwork:

  • We reviewed last night’s ordering fractions and decimals homework, and we then reviewed a few more problems before you took today’s quiz over converting fractions and decimals and ordering fractions and decimals
  • You took the next two boxes of notes: “Percents to Fractions” and “Percents to Decimals.” If you need them again, here the are   Converting Percents to Frac & Dec
  • You had homework time
  • You did “Find the Red Dot” as a Halloween trick….Some of you wanted to share with your family, but don’t scare little brothers or sisters :o ) dot

Ordering Decimals and Fractions

Classwork:

  • We checked and reviewed last night’s homework assignment
  • We practiced converting fractions to decimals and decimals to fractions (see yesterday’s blog if you need help or your green notes)
  • We did a few comparison problems….given a decimal and a fraction, which is greater.
  • Then we moved into ordering fractions and decimals. You must either convert all of the given numbers to decimals OR you should convert them all to fractions. I recommend you convert everything to decimals because then you don’t have to worry about finding a common denominator and rewrite all of the fractions with that same denominator, but either way you should get the same answer (if done correctly)

Homework:

  1. Thick workbook – page 96: 13-20 – show all work for the division. If it is a common fraction, such as 1/2, and you know its decimal equivalent, I’m okay with no work for that particular problem
  2. Quiz tomorrow – converting fractions to decimals and decimals to fractions AND ordering fractions and decimals

Converting Fractions to Decimals and Decimals to Fractions

Classwork:

  • We did the homework check and filled homework tickets
  • If you didn’t already have 100%, you completed the second timed skills drill of the week
  • You folded your green paper into six sections for your Unit 3B notes….THE GREEN SHEET WILL BE YOUR STUDY GUIDE FOR THE THIS UNIT, SO DON’T LOSE THIS PAPER AND MAKE SURE YOU GET ALL OF THE STEPS AND EXAMPLES WRITTEN OUT COMPLETELY.
  • We completed the top two sections of your notes: Decimals to Fractions and Fractions to Decimals. If you didn’t get the notes completely in class, download them here   Converting Decimals and Fractions
  • Remember we talked about how to converting a repeating decimal (if there is one digit in the tenths place which repeats) to a fraction. Whatever digit is repeating, you put that digit over 9 (yes, always 9). This will only work if it is one digit repeating in the tenths place….this hint might help you on one of your homework problems.

Ratio & Proportion Practice

Classwork:

  • We went through and discussed last night’s homework
  • We discussed the differences and definitions of ratios and proportions
  • We practiced setting up proportions from word problems, and we practiced cross-multiplying and dividing….that will always work to solve for the missing value (the variable) in a proportion if you have the proportion set up properly. Remember whatever object you put on the top of one ratio must also be on the top in the other ratio in your proportions. If it helps, put labels after the numbers so you know you are setting everything up properly…for exampe, if you put # of points on the top and # of minutes on the bottom, then you must put points on the top and minutes on the bottom of the other ratio to form your proportion.
  • We played “Sink or Swim” to practice ratios and proportions

Homework:

  • Periods 1, 3, & 4: Thin workbook page 56 – Do NOT do #1!
  • Period 2: Worksheet (7-3 Practice C and 7-2 Puzzles, Twisters, and Teasers)
  • Unit 3A: Fractions Retest tomorrow morning at 8:00 A.M. – be in the theater at that time

Ratios & Proportions

Classwork:

  • You did your first skills drill of the week (two-digit by one-digit) multiplication, and overall you guys did GREAT!!! I was amazed with how many 100% were earned today!
  • We talked about Unit 3B: Ratios, Pproportions, and Percents. We are going to move circle graphs out of unit 3B, and we’re going to do those separately.
  • We discussed ratios and how a ratio is a comparison of two quantities such as # of boys compared to # of girls in class. 13 boys compared to 6 girls in class can be written 3 ways: 13/6, 13 to 6 or 13:6. Remember to simplify ratios so they are in their simplest form.
  • We then discussed proportions (two equivalent ratios), and how we can cross-multiply and divide to find the missing value in a proportion. In most class we tried to set up some proportions from word problems. Do the best you can with the word problems, and we’ll work on them some more in class tomorrow!

Homework:

  • Periods 1, 3, & 4: Thick workbook page 209
  • Period 2: Thin workbook page 56

Multiplication & Division of Decimals

Classwork:

  • We reviewed last night’s homework assignment
  • In 1st period, we cleaned out binders (all other classes did this yesterday)…you were to keep everything that was on colored paper and your key words/phrases sheet we worked on last week
  • We did a few examples of multiplication with decimals and we did a few examples of division with decimals so you would have them to refer to for tonight’s homework. In multiplication the decimals do not need to be lined up like they do in addition and subtraction

Homework:

  1. Thick workbook – page 66: EVENS
  2. Thick workbook – page 69: EVENS
  3. If you are taking the re-test Wednesday morning at 8:00 A.M., you need to let me know by Monday afternoon. If you haven’t told me you are coming, there won’t be a test copied for you.

How Can I Help My Child Exceed Standards on the CRCT?

We hope that you will join us on Tuesday night, October 27th at 7:00 PM in the McClure Theater for CRCT Parent Night.  We want to focus on ways that we can work together to ensure that your child not only “meets” standards on the CRCT this spring, but that they exceed standards in all areas possible.

An overview session for all parents will be held in the theater from 7:00-7:20.  Parents will then have the opportunity to attend three mini-sessions of their choice to enhance their child’s success on the CRCT.  The schedule is listed below:

Adding & Subtracting of Decimals

Classwork:

  • The first item on our agenda was to clean out binders. I encouraged you to keep all material on colored paper (study guides, notes we’ve done together in class, etc.) and your key words/phrases sheet. You can get rid of all graded work from first nine weeks and all assignments/class work from first nine weeks.
  • You received your test back for review. If you are interested in taking the Unit 3A: Fractions retest, it will be given next Wednesday morning at 8:00 A.M. Be in the theater at 8:00 A.M., and I will come down to get you. Be sure to study and practice because the second grade stands!
  • You received an orange decimals study guide sheet. Decimals should have been mastered before coming to middle school, but sometimes you can’t remember everything, so you can refer to the orange sheet if you need help remembering how to add and subtract for tonight’s homework.
  • You worked on your homework and could get your answers checked as often as possible before the end of class

Homework:

  1. Thick workbook -page 58 (adding & subtracting decimals)
  2. Unit 3A: Fractions retake next Wednesday, Oct. 28 at 8:00 A.M.
