Surface Area of Cylinders

Classwork:

  • We checked and went through numerous homework problems….if you get a homework problem incorrect, you should be writing down the correct way to solve the problem so you have some good practice problems to review before quizzes and tests
  • We filled out the next page in your study guide/practice packet….surface area of cylinder. This means we calculated the sum of the area of the 2-D shapes which make up a cylinder (two circles and a rectangle). We did it first by breaking the solid into the three separate pieces and adding them, then we tried it with the formula. We then practiced a few together from your green packet!
  • If you are using the formula method, you will always use the RADIUS (half of the distance across a circle through the center), so be sure not to accidentally use a diameter.

Homework:

  1. Surface area of cylinders worksheet – the first two problems are nets of cylinder so it just shows the solids broken down into the three separate parts, and be sure to think about #8 – remember where a label would actually cover
  2. Surface area quiz moved to Tuesday

Surface Area of Rectangular Prisms

Classwork:

  • We went through the three practice problems in your green packet step-by-step, and you were to make sure you had them copied down exactly as you saw them worked out so you have good examples to refer to this unit. Be sure to follow the steps one at a time.
  • We did a practice problem together and checked for understanding
  • You received your homework sheet, and had time to get started in class today. We discussed the problems and how you might solve some of them (some of you even wrote notes for yourself in the margin).

Homework:

  1. Surface Area Worksheet – On side 146 do NOT do #1 – #5; on side 147 – #2 the number which was cut out by the hole punch is 48.6
  2. Surface area quiz – Monday

Vocab Quiz & Beginning of Surface Area

Classwork:

  • We started class by checking homework (completion grade for today) and going through the formulas for area and circumference of a circle
  • You took the unit 7 vocabulary & characteristics of geometric solids quiz
  • You received your yellow formula sheet which can be used on any and all assignments, quizzes, and tests in this unit – DO NOT LOSE THIS SHEET
  • You received your green study guide/practice packet. We will fill in the blanks as we discuss the different topics in the unit, and we will complete the practice problems on the bottom of each section. Please be sure you start by writing the formula, then the next step is to substitute in the numbers, then solve. If you want an example, please click here   Prism SA Example
  • If you choose to break down the shape and find all of the separate areas, you are welcome to do that as well, but then I need to see the area of the front, back, top, bottom, left, and right (just like in the packet)
  • Be sure to label all surface area problems with square units

Homework:

  1. Complete the three prism surface area problems that on are the back of the first page of your green study guide packet…you may use calculators AFTER you have written out the formulas and substituted  the numbers in the formula…..I should still see step by step what you did (see example above) in order to receive credit
  2. Surface Area quiz – Monday

Geometric Solids Practice

Classwork:

  • The homework check started class as usual
  • We practiced naming geometric solids, counting faces, edges, vertices, and bases, and figured out what nets make which geometric solids by going through 8 stations with your group.
  • Your homework is to complete thick workbook – page 343: 4 – 9. You need to know how to calculate CIRCUMFERENCE  and AREA of circles. This is a review from elementary school, but you might have forgotten.
  • Use 3.14 for pi
  • Circumference is the distance aroudn the outside of a circle.                                 C = pi x diameter (remember the diameter is the distance from one side of a circle to another through the center; if you’re given a radius (half the distance across the circle), you’ll have to double the radius and mutliply by pi).
  • To find the area of a circle you need to pi and the radius.                                         A = pi x radius squared; if you square a number that means to multiply it times itself (do NOT multiply it by 2)

Homework:

  1. Thick workbook – page 343: 4 – 9
  2. Quiz tomorrow – unit 7 vocab & characteristics of geometric solids

Student Book Swap!

  • Book Swap: Book swap collection will begin February 22nd during homeroom.  Swap day will be Thursday, March 4th at Literacy Night & Friday, March 5th during homeroom for those unable to attend Literacy Night.
    • Pre-Swap Information:
      • Students will bring in books from home that they no longer wish to read. These should be books that other middle school students would want to read and should be school appropriate and in good condition.
      • For every two books donated, the student will receive a voucher worth one ‘new-to-you’ book.
      • During homeroom February 22-March 4, students may bring their book-swap books to the Professional Materials Room in the Media Center.
      • The two-books-for-one swap will allow us to have books left over to ‘sell’ for Maverick Money on Monday, March  8th and helps ensure that every student leaves with a book that they want to read.
      • All book-swappers’ vouchers will be entered into a drawing for a $25 Barnes & Noble gift card.

Finish Unit 7 Vocabulary

Classwork:

  • We finished taking notes about Unit 7 – Vocabulary. We discussed real life examples of where we see things shaped liked rectangular prisms, rectangular pyramds, cones, cylinders, and cubes.
  • We discussed the quiz which is going to be given on Wednesday. It will include the 15 vocabulary words and it will also include characteristics of geometric solids (# of edges, # of faces, # of vertices, and name of the solid)…we will practice this stuff tomorrow in class.
  • With the remaining time you could work on thin workbook page 88 or finish watching “Flatland.”

Homework:

  1. Unit 6B retest – tomorrow morning – if you showed me your corrections last week, please be in the theater at 8:00 A.M.
  2. Thin workbook – page 88
  3. Quiz Wednesday – Unit 7 vocab. & characteristics of geometric solids

Unit 7 Vocabulary

Classwork:

  • Some students had to write their errors down from the Unit 6B test in order to be given the opportunity to take the re-test Tuesday morning. All students who are re-testing should have the problems and solutions written down to use as a study tool in case any parents would like to make up practice problems or help their child practice before the re-test.
  • We started the vocabulary for Unit 7: Solids & Measurement….we wrote down 8 of the words/pictures/definitions today, and we will finish it up on Monday. Start studying the words over the weekend, so when you get the next 8 on Monday, you’ll already know half of the words! Here’s the power point if you want a sneak peek at the next 8 words :)    Unit 7 Vocab

Homework:

  1. Thick workbook pages 347 &348
  2. Vocabulary and Solids quiz on Wednesday – Unit 7 vocab, names of solids, number of edges, number of faces, and number of vertices will be on the quiz

Beginnings of Unit 7

Classwork:

  • We started class by going over the Uunit 6B test – remember I’m doing the re-test a little different this time. I told you before we started going over the answers/solutions, if you wanted to do the re-test, you had to write down all of the problems you had incorrect along with the correct solutions (that’s why I spent so much time going over the test). If you don’t have those problems and solutions, please don’t bother telling me tomorrow that you want to re-test! I will be asking you tomorrow to see your error sheet so be sure to bring it to class if you want to re-test Tuesday at 8:00 A.M.
  • We  started watching a video “Flatland” to introduce Unit 7: Solids & Measurement. In unit 7 we’re going to be calculating surface and volume of various geometric solids!

Homework: NONE (except if you are taking the re-test next Tuesday, then you should spend some time studying)
