Unit 8 Review Concepts

• We went through last night’s homework and discussed how to find the constant of proportionality if the constant wasn’t obvious.
• We practiced 11 problems to review the concepts we’ve learned up to this point in the unit….hopefully you’re starting to get into the swing of direct variation!
• We completed the last page of our direct variation study guide packet – finding the missing value in a direct variation. This packet doesn’t include all types of problems you’ll see on next week’s test, but we’ve been reviewing and practicing every day, so be sure to stay focused so you get as much practice as possible before test day!
• We addressed two different ways we could find the missing values…..substituting into the general equation (y = kx) and using a proportion (y-original/x-original = y-new/x-new). You are doing BOTH methods on your homework sheet, and we did the first one together so you should have an example to follow.

Homework:

1. Five “find the missing values” problems” – do every problem BOTH ways (see the back page of your study guide packet if you forgot how to solve)
2. Direct Variation Test – Wednesday

• We went through last night’s homework and worked through the problems you had questions about from page 80
• We reviewed the characteristics of direct variation graphs, the two direct variation equations, and that as x increases so does y or as x decreases so does y
• We filled in and talked about numerous examples of direct variation tables (the x/y tables)….use your light green packet to help you on the homework if you don’t know what the constant is for a problem.
• We completed #1 on the homework together, and then you had the rest of the time to work.

• We quickly checked Monday night’s homework
• We worked on filling in a small portion of your green direct variation study guide…..DIRECT VARIATION EQUATIONS, and we discussed the two different equations which can be used for direct variation problems. Be sure you know both equations ( y = kx and k = y/x) for next week’s test, but you can choose which one you prefer to use. Some of you are good at telling when it’s easier to use the division equation, so go for it, but for some of you it’s easier to stick with the multiplication equation….either way you get the same answer!
• We practiced by completing the right-hand side of Monday’s homework together in class and discussing the constants, equations, and graphs.
• We completed 4 problems on worksheet #80 and 2 problems on worksheet #82 together, and then the rest of the time was yours to work on the remainder of the assignment.

If you want to do some preparing for the CRCT at home (which we highly encourage download the attachment for directions to logon to either the “USA Test Prep” or the “Skill Tutor” website. Be sure you’re working on sections that pertain to sixth grade math…don’t just pick the easy sections (like addition).

You took the third nine weeks benchmark test during class today. After you finished today you could work on Skills Tutor or on something silently.

Homework: Be sure Monday night’s homework is complete!

• We went through the Unit 7 test to make sure any questions you had were answered and to make sure there were no grading errors.
• You received your Unit 8 – Direct Variation/Direct Proportion Packet – this is the study guide for the unit so it is important not to lose the information!  The test for this unit will be given either next Wednesday or Thursday….it’s going to be a short unit so make sure you stay on top of your homework and study guide so you’re well prepared for the test next week!

Homework:

1. Direct Variation Wkst. – Do the left side only (page 44: 1-6)

Please remember to either return your picture packet or to turn in money for however many sheets you want to purchase and return the unwanted pictures.

• You will get your test back on Monday
• We reviewed plotting ordered pairs on the coordinate plane (you did this will all positive numbers in elementary), and today we practice all positive numbers, but we also learned how to graph in all four sections (quadrants of the coordinate plane)
• We talked about if you have graph paper, this would be the unit to use it – it is NOT required for this unit, but we will be doing some graphing, and it might make it easier for you…..you can do all of your work on graph paper if you want for this unit (graph paper is actually very good to stay organized).
• If you don’t want to buy a whole pack of graph paper, you can download free graph paper from online….you just need plain paper and ink at home.  Here is the link for you   http://www.math-drills.com/graphpaper.shtml. Go to the bottom of the page where it states “Metric” or “Imperial.” You can choose what size squares you want to use OR if you go under “Other” where it states “co-ordinate grid paper” is has some numbers already on the paper…the only thing with that is you can’t put multiple graphs on a sheet because on the other sheets you can create several small graphs on each sheet….your choice
• You had the rest of class to work on your graphing worksheet….it should make a cartoon character!
