Progress Reports were sent home today.  Parents are asked to sign the reports and return them to school tomorrow. 

 

We defined the 11 vocabulary terms found in Ch 18, then continued to watch our movie on Apartheid.

Homework:  Define any vocabulary terms not completed in class.

Students completed graphic organizers about the creation and end of apartheid in  South Africa, along with the roles of  Nelson Mandela and  F.W. deKlerk.  We watched the beginning of  our Anti-apartheid movie where students were asked to observe tolerance and friendship.  Period 7/8 didn’t meet, but students were reminded to turn in their Raft Writing assignment that was due today.  Remember, this assignment is a project grade and 10 points will be deducted for each day it is not turned in…hope to get the rest of them Tuesday.

We began our day by completing a county student survey.  Later we moved to discussion of our final ethnic group before the  RAFT Writing  Assignment was given.  Student should work on their RAFT assignment this week for homework.  The finished product is due this Friday 2/12.

We began our Friday with a look at this week’s current events. Later we completed our review of Ch 19 Vocabulary terms, then finished up our notes and discussions on ethnic groups.   Country Brochures Projects were due today.

Ch 19 Vocabulary

Ethnic Groups

Instead of our usual location warmup, students used their time to begin defining the Chapter 19 vocabulary terms.  Any words not completed in class should be completed for homework.  We then spent some time identifying the diversity of religions within the Arab, Ashanti, Bantu, and Swahili  ethnic groups.

Homework:  Define Ch 19 Vocab terms if not finished in class:  Great Zimbabwe, Masai, Zulu, Pastoralism, Overgrazing, Kinship, Veldt, Afrikaner, Boer, African National Congress, Nelson Mandela, sanction, Willem deKlerk, multiparty system, Swahili, harambee

Remember, your country brochures are also due tomorrow.

European Contacts and the Slave Trade

Today we used our class time to explore how the slave trade worked.  Students then had the opportunity to take part in a simulation that allowed them to travel on a slave ship.  Their final task of the day was to write a 5-7 sentence paragraph reflecting their experience during the simulation.  Students should include how they felt physically, emotionally, and how they think slaves felt as they endured this experience.

Our Week in Review:  Last week we completed notes on the various cultural groups found in Africa, and began a look at how Africa is still recovering from the effects of the slave trade and colonialism.  Students also received a yellow Project Sheets which included an option for one of three extra credit assignments. 

Today we learned about the impact that European colonialism had on Africa.  Students worked with their partners to analyze this impact, as they completed their Colonial Catastrophe assignment. 

Homework: 

1.  Read pages 513-516 and answer questions 2 and 3

2.  Work on Country Brochure which is due Friday 2/5/10

Today we completed our discussions about environmental issues in Africa.  Some classes began to compare Ethnic and Religious Groups that are found in this region.  We ended our day with students gathering information for their Country Profiles.  We will continue to work on these throughout next week, so please bring your work to class each day.

Environmental Issues of Africa

Review for Map Test

Today we worked with partners to discuss environmental issues across the continent of Africa. 

 We will take our Map Test tomorrow and reviewed using Sheppard’s Software.  Students should know the following features of Africa: 

Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Sudan, Atlas Mountains, Congo River, Kalahari Desert, Lake Tanganyika, Lake Victoria, Niger River, Nile River, Sahel, Sahara, Savanna, Tropical Rain Forest
