We continued our discussion of waves. Most of our class focussed on the information found in the PP from chapter 20 which can be found in the post before this one.
We also spent some time reviewing all the information we’ve learned about waves since our last test, since we will be having our NEXT TEST on Thursday and Friday of this week (two days away).
To study for the test I would focus on both homework assignments you have done since the last test, all notes, and the lab we did on the nature of waves (copy of the lab can be found on previous post).
I would make sure that I could draw and lable both types of waves.
I would also make sure that I could solve some math problems with the formula v = f x λ.
Know how to solve for frequency.
HW: Study for TEST NEXT CLASS. Read above for advice.

I missed blogging since last Thursday so I will make up for lost time. Thursday and Friday of last week (21 and 22), we began our discussion on waves. We finished our notes and discussion on Monday and Tuesday (25 and 26- no HW). The notes can be found on this PP:
Ch20_win
On Monday and Tuesday (25 and 26 – no HW) we started a waves lab. A copy of this lab can be found here:
Waves and their Nature Lab
We spent Wednesday and Thursday finishing the lab.
HW for 1/27 and 1/28:
Read pg 584-588. Define the bold terms in your notes.

Today we took our chemical symbol quiz and elements test.
After the test, students were to read in their books on pages 574-579.
HW – Complete this assignment:
•Write a sentence for each bold term in the reading (4 bold terms).
•Draw and label a picture of both a longitudinal wave and a transverse wave.

We finished our discussion on the groups on the periodic chart. I gave you time in class to make flash cards to study the chemical symbols you will need to memorize. A listing of these elements can be see on the HW for our last blog.
In addition, we discussed briefly what should be in your notebooks since the beginning of the semester. We took notes on metals, non-metals, and metalloids the first day back from break. That same day, we completed a hands on lab about metals, non-metals, and metalloids. On January 07 and 11 we completed our lab and took notes on pure substances, mixtures, elements, compounds, atoms, and molecules.
HW: Study for test AND quiz NEXT class.
The quiz will be on 30 elements and their chemical symbols.
The Test will cover all the material we have learned since the beginning of the semester. I would make sure my notes were in order for this test (this includes notes, warm-ups, homework, and class work). You never know when you may have an OPEN NOTES TEST. If you want to look in your book, the main chapters that relate to the test would be chapters 4 and 12.

Today, we discussed the Periodic Chart and its origins. We learned about how it is set up and why the groups have similar properties. We color coded our periodic chart to show the distinction between the groups. The PP for this class can be seen here:
Ch12_win
We will have a quiz and a test in the near future, probably after MLK day.
HW: Begin memorizing the first 20 elements and their symbols. In addition you should also memorize Au, Ag, Fe, Zn, Hg, Pb, Cu, Cr, Ti, and Mn.

Today we finished up our short lab on metals, non-metals, and metalloids. We discussed the main differences between compounds and elements. We also learned about a new classification called “Pure Substances”. Pure substances are different than something called mixtures.
HW-
Write a short paragraph (6-8 sentences) explaining the differences between
pure substances and mixtures – use your book and/or notes from class.

First day back we discussed matter, elements, compounds, protons, neutrons, electrons, atoms, and molecules. We have used some of these terms this year but we learned how to put them into some sort of order today. We started a small lab today that taught us about metals, non-metals, and metalloids.
A copy of the handout we used in class can be found here: Metals, Non-metals, metalloids
HW – Read 90-97, Answer questions on page 93 #2-5, 7 AND questions on page 97 #1-6.

We discussed the states of matter (solid, liquid, gas, and plasma) and how they are different. This is kind of a review from elementary school but it is good to discuss it briefly. We also learned some new terms like viscosity, surface tension, and the difference between Boyles’s and Charles’s Laws.
The terms we discussed can be found here:
Chapter 3 States of Matter Teacher Notes
If you missed class you can use the on-line textbook to answer to define these terms and answer the questions.
HW: NONE
Test on Tuesday and Wednesday of next week. It will cover, 3 types of levers, energy, energy resources, and states of matter (notes from today).
Don’t miss Friday and Monday’s class. We will be doing a dry ice lab!

We discussed and took notes on the types of energy and the resources that we utilize. We even had time to perform a few skits. A copy of the terms we discussed is here:
Chapter 9 Energy and Energy Resources Teacher Notes
If you missed this class, you could use the on-line text book to define these terms and/or read about this information.
HW: NONE
We will have a quiz next Tuesday and Wednesday that will cover this material, the three types of levers, and states of matter that we will discuss next class.

Today, we had a lab on simple machines (levers to be exact). We will finish this in our next class. My “A” day has already started this lab but my “B” day won’t start this until after break.
Over the vaca, get some rest and relaxation.
Remember to spend a little time on the science of sports project. I advised that people be done with the paper part of the project by 11/20. Remember the essay represents 80% of the final grade. Think about what you will present to the class on 12/3 or 12/4. A good place to get information from is your essay. If you haven’t cometed the essay, I would do that first before I finalized my poster and presentation.
Eat a lot of turkey and watch football!

HW: Finish writing essay about the science of sports. Complete your poster and think about how you will present. Final projects are due the Thursday and Friday you come back (12/3 and 12/4)
