March 18-19 – Electricity

We have begun electricity this week. The PP for this unit is here:

Everything we are learning can be found on that PP. In class we took notes this week, completed the electroscope lab, and I made a battery with chemicals and even with a lemon!

HW: None but we will have a quiz next week on electricity. Make sure you keep your notes current (no pun intended).

Quiz Day on Sound – Intro to Light and EM Waves – February 18 and 19

We handed in our oscilloscope flip books today and took our “sound” quiz. Remember, you will see this information again when we take our next test that will cover sound and light.

Advanced Sound Concepts – February 16 and 17

We discussed some more advanced concepts about sound. These topics included how and why a sonic boom is created when we break the sound barrier, the concept and application of the Doppler Effect in everyday life, and the relationship between frequency/pitch and amplitude/loudness. The PP for these notes can be found within the Chapter 21 PP that was listed on the blog in previous posts. Here is another copy:

We will have a quiz on sound next class. I would study the new “sound” terms that are in your notes. I would reread any homework assignments for understanding. The oscilloscope flip book (assuming it was completed properly) should be an excellent study tool.

Feb 10 and 11 – Pitch and Frequency

We completed our lab today from last class. A copy of the lab can be found on my last post.

It is important that you understand the lab because this concept will tested on! If the weather is nice next week, we may have a sound enrichment lesson, where we will get to go different locations around the school, including outside. Obviously weather pending.

We will have a test/quiz next week on sound. After that, we will be moving into “Light”.

HW: None (Unless you need to complete the lab).

Feb 08 and 09 – Sound

Feb 4 and 5 – Test Day

Waves Continued – 2/2 and 2/3

We continued our discussion of waves. Most of our class focussed on the information found in the PP from chapter 20 which can be found in the post before this one.

We also spent some time reviewing all the information we’ve learned about waves since our last test, since we will be having our NEXT TEST on Thursday and Friday of this week (two days away).

To study for the test I would focus on both homework assignments you have done since the last test, all notes, and the lab we did on the nature of waves (copy of the lab can be found on previous post).

I would make sure that I could draw and lable both types of waves.

I would also make sure that I could solve some math problems with the formula v = f x λ.

Know how to solve for frequency.

I missed blogging since last Thursday so I will make up for lost time. Thursday and Friday of last week (21 and 22), we began our discussion on waves. We finished our notes and discussion on Monday and Tuesday (25 and 26- no HW). The notes can be found on this PP:

Test Day for Elements and Periodic Chart – 1/19 and 1/20

Today we took our chemical symbol quiz and elements test.

After the test, students were to read in their books on pages 574-579.

HW – Complete this assignment:

•Write a sentence for each bold term in the reading (4 bold terms).

•Draw and label a picture of both a longitudinal wave and a transverse wave.

Periodic Chart and Chemical Symbols – January 14-15

We finished our discussion on the groups on the periodic chart. I gave you time in class to make flash cards to study the chemical symbols you will need to memorize. A listing of these elements can be see on the HW for our last blog.

In addition, we discussed briefly what should be in your notebooks since the beginning of the semester. We took notes on metals, non-metals, and metalloids the first day back from break. That same day, we completed a hands on lab about metals, non-metals, and metalloids. On January 07 and 11 we completed our lab and took notes on pure substances, mixtures, elements, compounds, atoms, and molecules.

HW: Study for test AND quiz NEXT class.

The quiz will be on 30 elements and their chemical symbols.

The Test will cover all the material we have learned since the beginning of the semester. I would make sure my notes were in order for this test (this includes notes, warm-ups, homework, and class work). You never know when you may have an OPEN NOTES TEST. If you want to look in your book, the main chapters that relate to the test would be chapters 4 and 12.
