Also, remember to continue your research project on your African country. I will have your rubrics for you by Monday.
HW: Vocabulary Quiz Monday; Research project due Feb. 22nd
AC SS Students were assigned a Country Extension Project today which is due on Monday, Feb. 22nd. They are bringing home a partner contract that is to be signed by their parents. Each student drew for a country to research and picked a partner to work with for the assignment.
We also reviewed our Ch. 19 vocabulary words and students were given 15 minutes to start defining those words in class today. They are to finish the definitions for homework tonight. We will have a vocabulary quiz over these words on Friday.

CHAPTER 19 VOCABULARY
Slave Ship Simulation – Today our classroom turned into a slave ship. We taped off the dimensions of 4 feet by 18 inches and had one student per square as I read the The Middle Passage: A Slave Narrative by Olaudah Equino. Students then wrote a 5 sentence diary response about the experience. Ask your students to share their feelings or maybe something they learned about the conditions on the slave ship.
I am attaching the power point that we took notes on from Tuesday’s class for any student that was absent.

HW: None
Today students continued their study of the African Slave trade by visiting the library exhibit- Bunce Island. Students were given a scavenger hunt to complete while reading about the history of Bunce Island. Yesterday, our class took Cornell Notes on the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade and tomorrow we will continue our learning by reading The Middle Passage – A Slave Narrative.
I am a bit behind on grading due to conference week but will hopefully have the students center packets graded which they did while learning about the African Ethnic Groups (3 day lesson) and will also finish grading their “extra mile” projects. The projects look wonderful and the students will get to share their projects with their classmates: African Masks and Kente Cloths.
HW: None tonight but a project announcement will be made shortly!
I have so enjoyed meeting with all your parents during conference week.
Today, students read I Met a Witch Doctor….as we continued our study of African cultures and religion. On Monday students will work in their groups to create a skit to demonstrate their understanding of animism and why people would go see a Shaman.
HW: None – enjoy your weekend!
Today you had a RAFT writing assignment which all students began working on in class. Make sure you finish the assignment for homework and follow your rubic/directions. Remember, I want this written not typed as you are a Bedouin keeping a journal.
Tomorrow I will be at school by 8:15 for any students that were absent during the days we worked on our centers or students who did not complete the assignment within the 3 days. Just wait in the auditorium and I will come by and get you.
HW: RAFT assignment
Today, is our last day for our African ethnic centers. We have learned about the Swahili, Bantu, Arab, and Ashanti. Also, you had the opportunity for extra credit by making African Tribal Masks, Kente Cloth, or writing an African Folktale. I am very excited about your presentations – the creativity I have seen in your projects look wonderful!
Just a reminder that next week is conference week so you will be getting out of school early all of next week. McClure will also be having their book fair, so I am sure you will want to visit the library.
HW: Finish any center work
Hi Students,
Today, you took your Africa Map Test and we started learning about Africa’s ethnic groups. As you worked in your centers, you learned about the Bantu, Arab, Swahili, and Ashanti – their language, religion, what part of Africa they lived in, and many other interesting facts. We will continue our exploration on Tuesday (Monday is a holiday – enjoy). There is also an opportunity for EXTRA CREDIT. The criteria and rubric was given to you with your packets. Your choices were: African Folktale, African Tribal Mask, and Kente Cloth. I am attaching information about what each colors represent for the Kente Cloth. If you decide (and I hope you do) to do the extra credit, it is due on Wednesday – I can’t wait to see your presentation.
