Fri. March 19th – India’s Caste System

Today, we had a “real world” learning experience! Students experienced what life was like as a Hindu in India before the caste system was made illegal. They drew colored sticks which determined their caste. Ask your child if they were a Brahman or an Untouchable and to explain how life was different for the various caste. Even though the caste system is no longer legal, we discussed how it can take a long time to change people way of thinking.

Update: SE Asia Map Test has been moved to Tuesday:) – Wouldn’t hurt to start studying over the weekend – Sheppard’s Software is available on my Blog, give it a try.

Report Cards were given out on Thursday, please remember to have your parents sign and return. I will check it off and give it right back for you to take home.

Thurs. March 18th – REPORT CARDS/FOREIGN LANGUAGE LETTER

Today, students watched the movie Everest! A great movie we enjoy showing every year in SS. Mt. Everest is the tallest mountain in the world – hopefully you all really liked seeing this movie.

Report cards were passed given out at the end of school today. Some students also received foreign language letters. Parents, if you would like your child to take foreign language next year, please sign and return that letter ASAP! Foreign language classes are a first come-first serve basis- we literally write the date and time on the letter when it is returned by the student.

Today, students learned that Hinduism was the third largest religion in the world! It is just behind Christianity and Islam. Students took Cornell Notes on Hinduism and then wrote a summary of their notes.

Today, students wrote 10 facts as they watched a video on S. Asia. We payed close attention to the affect the Himalayas have on the subcontinent of India and we learned about monsoons (seasonal winds). Next, students received a map of Asia. Many of the features they were familiar with but there were a few new features such as the Gobi Desert and Yellow River just to name a couple. Students started on this in class and were to finish it for homework – remember label and color!

Hi Students,

Today, you turned in your “Save the Ganges Poster” assigned by Ms. Gage:) We continued our study of the sacred Ganges River in India by creating a comic strip. Please make sure to follow the rubric as you complete this assignment. If you did not finish this in class, it is to be finished at home.

HEADS UP – Map test over Asia next Monday. At this point, you have completed a physcial map of India a Mr. Cloud Map of Asia, and next I will give you a map to complete and use as a review source for Monday’s test.

Welcome to India – March 10th

Students have began learning about the subcontinent of India. They began by defining Ch. 20 vocabulary words and identifying key features on a physical map of India. Where is India in relation to where we are in the world? What continent is India a part of? Later this week we will be learning about a very sacred river to the people of India – do you know which one I am speaking of?

Students in Periods 3/4, 5, and 6 took their Africa Government Test today. Per. 7/8 had their test postponed until tomorrow as I forgot to return their study guides on Thursday-yikes! There was a key on the blog; however, I felt better about holding the test until tomorrow.

All students completed a lesson on World Hunger today, so their homework relates to that lesson. Think on today’s assignment and back to the movie we viewed last Thursday – Invisible Children and be creative with your bumper sticker.

Today, in SS all classes reviewed for our Economic Vocabulary Quiz. If you check out Mr. Bruner’s Blog, you will find a Match Game to play which will help you to review. You also have your list of terms. Make sure you have finished your study guide which you were given on Monday if you have not done so already.

Hi students and parents – I spoke with all students today about their projects and their progress on their projects. I have stapled a project reminder in all agendas (for those students that had their agendas). I have asked that they get their parents signature since 20 pts will be deducted each day a project is late.
